Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bulls

Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

URGENT PLEA!!!  FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED ...

Aphrodite

URGENT - PLEASE HELP EMACIATED MAMA DOG

We only had room for puppies but how could we ever pull them from their mom and leave her at the shelter to die?

We have nowhere for Aphrodite to go. She is currently kept in a temporary foster home while her puppies are weaned but she can't stay there as they are over the pet limit. Aphrodite is at risk of being confiscated by animal control and sent back to the shelter. In addition, this sweet girl is Heartworm positive.... Please help before it's too late. If you can't foster, please DONATE for her care....

12 NEW PUPPIES IN PROGRAM

In one week alone, *5* nursing Pit Bull mothers were brought in to shelter. Some were confiscated on cruelty charges, some were dumped by owners. 5 nursing moms means "DOZENS" of puppies scheduled to be DESTROYED unless pulled by licensed rescue groups!

MPR was contacted to help with the situation. Sadly, at this point we were only able to rescue 2 moms and their litters. Still this means 12 new dogs arriving at once in our program.

Puppies will be ready for adoption in mid august but we are taking applications and donations now. We have 6 males and 4 females. Puppies are Tan & Merle, White, White and Lilac, Lilac and Chocolate.

Moms and puppies expenses;

Puppy Food for everyone, including can food. Moms are emaciated. Crates, PlayPens, 12 Spays and Neutering's, Vaccinations for everyone, deworming, collars, medical care for the moms including Heartworm Treatment for Aphrodite and potential boarding fee if we cant find her a home = $$$$$$

NEW BEGINNINGS  July 2007  Meet the new MPR Dogs

Thanks to several adoptions last month (scroll down to see the lucky dogs who found a home in June), MPR was able to make room in the program to save a few more dogs. Meet the new lucky ones.

Please remember, even if the dogs in MPR program are safe, adopting them FREES UP a MUCH NEEDED foster home and makes room in our program to save, evaluate and socialize dogs and puppies that are scheduled to be euthanized. By adopting one of our dogs, YOU ARE SAVING TWO LIVES!

Talulah

9 weeks old "Blue Brindle" puppy girl. ADORABLE!

Registered American Bulldog. Gwen and Fergie are full blooded "papered" American Bulldogs. Those sweethearts were rejected by the breeder when they became too old to sell.... He was going to bring them to a high-kill shelter to be destroyed when we stepped in. The dogs are very sweet but will need a little bit of work with socialization. AB's are known to make excellent family companions and guardians. They are said to genuinely love children. They are usually easy-going and have a moderate energy level. There are three different strains of ABs and we believe Gwen and Fergie are on the small size. Only 7 months old though they are not full grown yet. They should be around 80 Lbs as adults. AB's are usually big babies who love to cuddle and so far those sweet girls fit the bill.

MPR BLOG July 2007   What happened to America's Dog??

You may have heard the American Pit Bull Terrier referred to as the ideal family pet, the "nanny dog", statistically the #1 most popular choice of dog for families with small children....but that was 40 years ago.  What has happened in such a short span of time to turn the all-American family pet into public enemy number one? Has the breed changed?

Coming soon

Most often, the answer is no.  The biggest factor in the downfall of the reputation of "America's dog" is in fact the person on the other end of the leash.

Although I'll be the first person to admit that I'm not exactly sure of everything that has lead up to the sad state that things are in today, it does seem to me that everything goes in a cycle.  This cycle being one of cruelty, greed, ignorance and fear.

Cruelty and greed in the fact that back-alley and "professional" dog fighting rings are on the rise and is already a billion dollar international industry.  Pit bulls all over the United States, and even in other countries where dog fighting is legal, are being tortured and abused in the name of a "sport" that is financially profitable for their abusers, who claim to love the breed.

Once these dogs lose a fight, or become of no further monetary worth to their "owners", they are shot, set on fire, electrocuted, or in the very best case scenario put to sleep.  The news media catches wind of these events and even of some dog attacks.

This is where ignorance and fear come in.  All of a sudden, there is a pit bull attack on every street corner and the townspeople are living in fear of these "monsters" who live in the backyards next to them.  No one stops to notice that half of the "pit bulls" featured in news stories don't even resemble a pit bull but just got labeled as such simply because they bit someone.  Or the fact that dogs of all breeds and sizes bite people every day but that doesn't seem to garner much news coverage or merit any real attention.  Or even the fact that when it is a pit bull in question, it is usually an abused or neglected dog that was involved in an incident.

Then the breed bans started in and in many cases all this solved was responsible owners losing their beloved pets and criminals and thugs ignoring the laws and continuing to keep unstable and uncared for animals.

From as much as I can gather, this is the chain of events that has led up to where we currently stand.  All of these events the evils of man, none the fault of this loyal and loving breed.  So please remember the next time you see the latest news story about a chained up pit bull attacking someone, that is NOT the real Pit Bull.

The real American Pit Bull terriers of the world are at home snuggled up on the couch with a child, sitting at their owners feet or even busy working as certified therapy dogs.  Sadly a lot of them are even sitting in countless shelters waiting for their turn to die; their punishment for doing nothing more than existing and wanting to be loved. And that need for love and beautiful personality will always be what makes pit bulls, at least my eyes, America's dog.

Remember, Petey was a Pit Bull

"Pete The Pup" or Lucenay's Peter (his United Kennel Club registered name), was among the first APBT's chosen to be registered with the American Kennel Club as a Staffordshire Terrier in 1936. Him and 4 other Pit Bulls became the foundation blood for this cousin breed. Yes, Petey was a Pit Bull.....

Manhattan, KS - Tougher dog laws OKd

Beginning Monday, dog owners in Manhattan had better have their animals on a leash when they leave their property or they face a minimum $50 fine under amendments to the city's at-large and dangerous dog ordinances approved Tuesday by the City Commission.

Other changes to the dangerous dog ordinance approved Tuesday include the outlawing of hybridized dogs in the city, or those bred with wolves or coyotes. Six new breeds of dogs have been added to the dozen or so the city considers to be potentially dangerous because of size and breed. They are the Argentine Dogo, Cane Corso, Dogue de Bordeaux, Fila Brasileiro, Perro de Preso Canario, and German Shepherd. More ...

Monday, July 16, 2007

Manhattan, KS The commission plans to finalize several changes to Chapter 6 of the city code dealing with dangerous dogs. Second reading of the ordinance approved last week by the commission. Also, wolf hybrids would not be allowed in the city. The German Shepherd has been added to the city's list of potentially dangerous dogs, as have five other breeds.

Additionally, if a dog has been declared dangerous by a judge, the owners must meet specific ownership requirements, such as purchasing liability insurance, keeping the animal confined in a certain type of outdoor enclosure, and having it micro-chipped and photographed for identification purposes. Monday, July 09, 2007 Rolla, MO The first order of business during the First Reading for Police Chief Mark Kearse’s proposed pet ordinance [on Monday, July 2].... The proposal also mandates the registration of all Pit Bull-Terrier type of dogs. The proposal also includes American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of these dogs. The proposal also states there will be no cost to the owner to register these dogs. However, at the time of registration these dogs must be spayed or neutered. More ...
Monday, July 09, 2007 Manhattan, KS is ONCE AGAIN considering BSL!! The City Commission room at City Hall Tuesday was packed with people unhappy about a possible breed-specific dangerous dog ban. Manhattan, KS - Decision due on doggone ordinance Life might not be the same for dogs viewed as dangerous and their owners after the City Commission approves an ordinance regulating them Tuesday.

NO BREED BAN IN MOUNTAIN GROVE!

To MPR Volunteers;

Just wanted to update you on the pit bull ban that the city of Mountain Grove, Missouri was trying to pass. The meeting was on June 19th, and the ban of any breed of dog did NOT pass!! Instead, they are revising the vicious/dangerous dog laws. Turns out this all started because they want people to be able to feel safe walking in town, or safe in their yards. There had never been any attacks by pit bulls in our city. There are alot of pit owners that fought with us on this ban. I am so happy to let you and your group know that it did not pass!! We will find out the 1st tuesday of July (next city meeting) what the additions to the dangerous/vicious dog laws will be. I will let you know what happens with that.

Thank you all so much for all the information and help! I can't thank you enough! My roommate has a pit bull, and the way the city was trying to ban them was awful! If an owner had a pit, they were going to have to surrender the dog to be destroyed! We just can't thank you enough for everything!! Thank you all again from the bottom of our hearts!

CENTERFOLD July 2007   Silly & Friendly Sherman

Silly Sherman

Silly Sherman is smiling because he knows that YOU'RE going to love him as much as we do! This amazing dog has been waiting MORE THAN A YEAR!!!! Please don't let him wait any longer. Shermy was raised with kids and gets along with friendly female dogs. He lives in an apartment in town and does well on walks. He would be the perfect candidate for someone who is looking for a dog that looks like a grizzly bear, but acts like a Teddy bear!

FEATURED VOLUNTEER JULY 2007   Courtney Sebring

Silly Sherman

Meet our fabulous Courtney and her gang.

This month MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of this wonderful volunteer. Not only is Courtney MPR's secretary and handles all our official paper work, but she is also an Adoption-Counselor spectacular. Courtney is indeed unbeatable when it comes to handling all aspects of an adoption, from the initial screening, phone interview, homecheck and adoption finalization.

People who have adopted a dog from MPR with Courtney's assistance only have great things to say about her. Courtney 's hard work and commitment to MPR doesn't go unnoticed and we are so lucky to have her on board.

  HAPPY ENDINGS  June 2007

MPR gang is always thrilled when we place one of our "old timers". Last month, our famously beautiful Bluegrass finally found a home worthy of his beauty..... Bluegrass had been in our program for more than a year..!!!! So a great reason to celebrate this July! In addition,. Hoola Hoop also found a loving home as did Lulu (see Featured Happy Ending) and our little guy Dandelion. We want to say a HUGE thank you to all our adopters.

Featured Happy Endings

"Lulu is truly a blessing. She loves to come to the Hurricane and listen to me play music and hang out with my friends... We've been taking walks and working on obedience. It's going really, really well.

We even decided to trust her being alone in the house a couple of times for about six hour spans and she has been so well behaved.

We love her to pieces." -Nate
