Story: Imagine living in a back yard with very little food and water and no doggie house to shelter you from the elements. You sit day in and day out watching the dogs on the "other" side of the fence come and go. Some come back bloody and badly injured and some don't come back at all. And you wonder if you are next. This is how our little Gem (my diamond in the rough) lived until now.
She is real beauty and her sweet disposition is as endearing as her gorgeous appearance.

Foster Situation: Gem currently resides with her foster brother Klondike (an American Bulldog/Boxer Mix) and her foster sister Lily (a little red nosed pittie).

Training: Gem came to us with a basic knowledge of house rules and basic commands. She is leash trained and doesn't pull when walked, unless something spooks her. We are currently working on her socialization skills with a few of our dog friendly neighbors and their munchkins (kids). It’s a slow process but she shows improvement every day. She will need a family that is willing to work with her on her insecurities and provide a patient and loving home.
Simply Irresistible | What a beauty | Sweet Girl
Personality: You couldn't ask for a sweeter or gentler dog. She is still slowly opening up to us and showing us what an amazing dog she really is and she has made tremendous improvement in coming out of her shell since she first came to us. We are still working on her cuddle skills; she will lie in bed with us from time to time but not for long periods as it seems to make her nervous. But we respect her boundaries and allow her come and go as she pleases.
Gem and her foster brother enjoy running suicides from their bedroom to the front door and back to their room several times in a row. They will sometimes even add a twist and choose separate rooms to run to and then run back to the hallway and "crash" into each other only to run back to the front of the house. Gem and Klondike have become the best of buds; they sometime will lie in their kennels together and they enjoy each other's company very much. And like any well behaved lady, Gem enjoys her alone time. (Klondike has yet to figure that out and will bark at her to come out and play but she just ignores him).

2/2010 UPDATE: Gem has been removed from MPR’s adoption program due to extreme shyness. She was moved to MPR's Santuary Program and will live out her years with her foster mom and dad. |
