Nelson is another example of the horror of dog fighting in Kansas City. We can only imagine what this poor guy went through before his rescue... Yet, he is one of the sweetest dogs in our program. He craves attention and is very affectionate. In fact, he's quite the needy baby... So dont apply for him if you are looking for an independen dog. This boy is a lover.

    Goof Face | Hunky Boy

Fri, Apr 3, 2009 UPDATE: Things are going GREAT! Nelson has completely adapted to the house, our family and regular-visiting friends... He sleeps at the foot of our bed, has the free run of MOST of the house during the workday (and literally only has had one accident inside, and that was when I got home 2 hours later than usual).

He has been an amazing addition to our family, and he and Blair (our 4 year old) are inseparable. If Blair is watching TV, Nelson is cuddled up nearby, and he follows Blair around the house, which is absolutely great w/ Blair. Hahaha

He loves walking around the park near the house and sits next to Ashley at Blair's soccer games... He does AMAZING at the soccer park, and we get a ton of compliments on how well-behaved and nice looking he is. One of my New Year's resolutions was to get back into shape, so Nelson and I have been able to take 3-4 walks a week when I get home from work... He is great on the leash, and even when he sees a squirrel or rabbit, he doesn't try to go after it at all... It's very easy for me to walk him which is awesome!

We just recently bought a new grill for the back patio, and we've been able to take advantage of some nice evenings of cooking out, and Nelson enjoys laying on the patio while I cook and Ash reads.

I really couldn't be happier with him!

Story: Nelson was brought into a spay and neuter clinic in Kansas City by good Samaritans who found him abandoned in a bad part of town. MPR had volunteers on location and no words could express the dismay everyone felt when they saw this poor pathetic dog, so thin and covered in wounds and scars.   Indeed, Nelson had cuts and injuries from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.  Even in that condition he was very well-mannered and loving.

MPR immediately secured a foster home for this precious soul so Nelson would recuperate from his ordeal in the safety of a loving home. Quite a difference for this courageous little warrior who survived the cruelty of dog fighting world.

He now has something to smile about! | What a ham! | With a bone | With a ball

It only took a few weeks for Nelson to be back on his feet and leave his past behind. He definitely looks like a different and has turned into quite the hunk. The mental wounds have healed as well.

Foster Situation: Nelson currently lives in a home with a 2 yr old female and he loves to play with his her. Roughhousing is supervised and the dogs do very well together. We gave the dogs a chance to get to know each other through crates and baby gates before they were introduced and they are now best friends.

Cute boy | So handsome | Sitting Pretty

Nelson has settled into into his foster home quite well. He has not had any accidents in his crate or in the house. Nelson loves to run and play in the fenced yard. He loves to go for walks/jogs in the neighborhood too.

Nelson looooooves attention! He's ready for you to play with him the minute you get home. He would do great in a home with an active owner who likes to play outside and go for runs, and possibly in a home with a female partner of a similar energy level to play with.

Training:  Nelson is very housebroken, he's never had an accident. He's also crate-trained. He gets fed, gets to play with toys, and sleeps in his crate. Nelson knows sit and lay down, and does those well for treats, food, toys, to go outside, etc. He's getting good at sitting while we're out on walks too, even though he's distracted. Nelson is a bit mouthy, mostly right after he's let out of his crate when I get home, which I'm working on training out of him. I just don't think he can handle his happiness when someone comes home.

Personality: Nelson is very outgoing. This happy dude wants to meet everyone and everything. He has met grown ups, little kids, a couple of babies, and has been really good with all of them. He is very silly and adventurous.

Goofball | Hey good lookin' | Ready for Halloween

Nelson is well behaved as a whole - He is high energy, but not hyper necessarily. He does love to run and play, but generally only in short bursts. Rabbits get his attention while on his leash more so than when he's in the yard.

Nelson does seem to be frightened by aggressive acting dogs, and is not a big fan of thunderstorms. Or just getting wet for that matter.

    Beautiful head | Irresistible

Overall, Nelson just wants to play a good long game of fetch or go for a jog, and then get to chill out with a bone or his kong and that makes him one happy dog.

Best Attribute: For me Nelson's best attribute has to be his resiliency.  Knowing where he came from, the mistreatment he suffered at the hands of humans and seeing him bounce back, is just amazing.  He has the ability to put a smile on your face every day with his unconditional love and affection.  He also has a very striking appearance, very handsome.

He also plays a hybrid game of fetch that's really fun. He likes playing it with sticks more than balls. The trick is to take two sticks. He'll sit for you to throw one and fetch it. I tried and tried to get him to learn drop, but he just wants to tug or gnaw on it. But, if you have a second stick in your hand, he's more interested in the one in your hand than the one in his mouth. So he'll drop his stick and sit for yours, and the game repeats. So much fun!
