Wanted: New family for a BEAUTIFUL YOUNG SINGLE red-head beauty! I have gorgeous gold eyes to melt your heart and juicy kisses to wash away your cares when you come home!! We could take walks in the park or just watch TV together. I'll be the perfect companion and won't ever ask for much. LOVE and DEVOTION are all yours in the exchange for a happy home. What are you waiting for?
Story: Sahara was found abandoned in the yard of a rental property in KCMO. Sahara was already spayed, so looks like someone cared at some point, but not enough to take her with them when they moved. Luckily, the rental home was owned by very Pit Bull friendly landlords. Not only did they help Sahara while the house was vacant, but the new tenant happens to be a MPR volunteer... Is this faith or what?
Foster Situation: Sahara is now fostered in a home with
2 dogs, a cat, and a 9 year old boy. She loves to play with other dogs but her enthusiasm sometimes gets the best of her. No aggression, just a lot of happy energy. Sahara would do good in a home with a playful male who shared the same drive for life. Sahara thinks the cat wants to play too and will bark at her but not aggressively.
Personality: While Sahara is very playful and energetic
outdoors, she's quiet and reserved inside. She loves
kids and has yet to meet a stranger.
Downfall: Sahara has been in our program for about a year now. We knew the minute we saw her that Sahara would have a hard time finding a home. Why, you ask? Because she's not a very attractive, big headed, stocky Pit Bull.... Sahara is probably a mix, and although she has the wonderful personality of a real Pit Bull, look wise, she can't compete with some of the beauties in our program...
Not a good reason, you say? We agree... We have no idea how to overcome this kind of misfortune though. As a group, MPR sees Sahara's beauty shine through her eyes.... Unfortunately, most people don't.
Now, how in the world could we ever explain to Sahara the reason she is not wanted? Reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with her personality, her intelligence, her house manners, etc…. Only her exterior... And quite frankly, we do think she is very pretty. But let's be frank, she is not very photogenic. Meeting her in person is a different story though - Her charm is simply impossible to resist - But people first see our dogs on pictures and well, truth is Sahara is not getting any applications.
We know that if Sahara was given a chance to meet you in person, she WOULD steal your heart because she truly has a superb disposition. One of the sweetest dog in the program. So please, try to look beyond her appearance in those pictures and see straight into Sahara's heart instead and you will be amazed by her incredible inner beauty.
Best Attribute: Sahara is a real sweetheart and
loves everyone. Her tail is always wagging. Her best feature is probably how friendly she is. Everyone she meets is a long-lost friend. She definitely has a way to make you feel good about yourself. A real moral-booster, this happy girl is what you need to come home to after a hard day at work.
Just wanted to drop you all a line and thank you for allowing my family to adopt Miss Sahara. She is a lovely dog, with a sweet well mannered personality, who loves to please. She has been an easy dog, even on the long car ride home from Missouri to Virginia. She loves everyone she meets, but she especially adores children. I have a 9 yr old daughter and a 12 yr old son and it was clear from the minute they met that Sahara worships children. She rode home in the car with them for about 4 hours (they stayed in New Jersey with their grandparents while we were in Missouri.) She got in the backseat of the car, plunked herself in the middle seat and preceded to lick and snuggle with the kids for the entire ride, including when they fell asleep, she let them use her as a puppy pillow.
She has met one of our dogs so far, her and my foster dog Flower are doing well together. She has not met the other two dogs as of yet, we are taking introductions slowly, and letting her adjust to one dog at a time. She LOVEs our dog friendly cat Luna, she licks her and snuffles her several times a day (much to Lunas delight.)
We just love her and once she fully settles in, I know she will fit right in. I know some people didn't think she was that pretty physically, (we don't agree) but she has a shiningly beautiful soul that radiates through her entire body, ending in her always wagging tail. Thanks MPR for keeping her safe with you for so long until we found her. You guys do a great thing for every dog you encounter.
All our love,
Katie, Aaran, Jordan, Siani, Sahara, T-Rex, Reece, Flower, Phoenix, Luna, Lily, Freckles and Speckles. AKA- The Jolly Pack !
10/22/2008 UPDATE:
I am Sahara's adopted Mommy and we in Virginia have been voting every day! Without MPR, we wouldn't have Sahara, so we love all of you for all you do! Hopefully we will be moving from Virginia to Missouri in February, so I can join you guys as a volunteer. Sahara BTW is doing well, although she was diagnosed with asthma and allergies. She is being well treated with medication and she is thriving. She gets along with her human brothers and sisters well, and she gets along well with one of her doggy sisters and her doggy brother very well. She is still adjusting to our other dog, but we are working on it slowly. She loves our cats, and is so sweet and wonderful. We couldn't be happier that we adopted her. I do have some updated pics for you if you would like me to mail them!
Saharas mommy,
Katie
4/4/2009 UPDATE: I thought you would like these photos of Miss Sahara. She is doing SO well , and we just ADORE her. It was a really long trip to get her, but she has been a wonderful asset to our family of dogs.
She loves my kids, she loves other dogs, she loves people, car rides and going places. She is a great hiker and we take advantage of our state park quite frequently. She has a best buddy as well, her adopted sister Flower (a pit bull , they simply adore one another. She loves her brother T-Rex (a Rottie) and her other sister Reece (a pit bull /american bulldog mix) as well, but she and Flower have a very special relationship. She thinks cats are pretty great too.
She is doing well on special food and medication for her allergies and asthma. She is learning all kinds of new things every day, she has mastered light switches (turning them off and on), bringing the phone, opening the refrigerator, getting a drink, and closing the refrigerator door. We are working on getting her AKC CGC Certified so she can take a Therapy Dog class.
My family still can't understand why someone abandoned her in a yard to begin with, and then why someone didn't adopt her almost immediately, she is such an awesome dog.
Thank you , thank you thank you MPR and all of your volunteers for what you do. I myself work for a small rescue where I live and know all the effort you guys put forth, without people like you and me, these dogs wouldn't have a chance.
Keep fighting the good fight and keep loving the dogs that others discard without thought, you really do make a difference!

4/6/2009 UPDATE:
She really loves to hike! Her and my other three dogs. She's having a grand old life here with us!
Thinking about her abandoned in that yard, and then thinking about her now, it doesn't seem possible that she's the same dog, but she is.
So here she is with Reece, Flower and T-Rex, her adopted doggie siblings, hiking through Leesburg State Park in Woodbridge, Virginia. The park is only a 10 minute drive from our house and now that the weather is nicer, we are getting the dogs out there as much as we can.
Its nice to take them places and have people comment on how well behaved and lovely and nice they are, especially once they realize ALL the dogs are Bullies. People are amazed at them, their behavior and how nice, friendly and well behaved and trained they are.
It makes me feel good to know in my small way I am turning some people's perceptions about our dogs around.
