3/26/2006 Adoption photo. Scarlet & her proud new mom Sydney ...

Hi,   I am taking Scarlet to obedience training with my vet's wife who is a dog trainer.  She had her first lesson last night and did awesome!!!  We have got her working on walking with the Gentle Leader which isnt a device that you can just put on a dog and expect them to start walking with it immediately...hee hee!

She is able to heel, sit, and knows the down command pretty dang good.  Mary, the trainer, said Scarlet is very smart and will learn fast.  She said sometimes it takes a couple weeks for a dog just to learn the down command alone!!  I didnt even know Scarlet knew how to do that!!  Wow!  Mary is so impressed with Scarlet and very excited to see what we are able to do with her.  That is so nice to hear her say.

Thanx again for the info. on the Dog Whisperer!!!  Scarlet thanks you for thinking of her!!  woof woof lick lick kiss kiss slop slop.....*wink*

9/26/06 Funny Scarlet is loved

HELLO!!! This is Sydney Dean in Lincoln, Nebraska. I adopted Scarlet from MPR back on March 26th 2006. We just got back from a family vacation to Lake Okoboji in Arnolds Park, Iowa and Scarlet had a blast hanging out there!!

She has come a long way since I first got her. I remember the very first time I went to walk her down the street and a car drove by us.... she tried to hide between my legs because she was scared not knowing what the heck it was! Now, when a car drives by, it's no big deal. When I take her outside and we walk by my car, she stops and stands there next to it thinking she is going to go bye-bye....LOL.

It took her quite some time to learn how to get out of a car since she wasn't use to being in one. My father had taken her over to their house and pulled into the garage. Scarlet wouldn't get out of the car! My father coaxed her and coaxed her and she just sat in the backseat looking at him....hee hee! So, he left her in there not knowing what to do. When my mom came home from running an errand, she asked, "Where is Scarlet?" My father told her Scarlet was in the backseat of the car and won't get out. My mother didn't believe him until she walked out into the garage and there sat Scarlet in the backseat just sittin' there looking out the back window. My mom laughed so hard seeing Scarlet sitting there. They eventually coaxed her out with a dog biscuit!!! Now, Scarlet knows how to get in and out of a car!

Scarlet has also spent several sessions in dog training and obedience classes. I feel more at ease being able to get her under control with obedience techniques I have been taught. Scarlet has learned the meaning of several words since I have had her. She knows the words: bye-bye, treat, go potty, wanna eat some nummy's?, sit, stay, down, and heel. She is a very smart girl!!! She is also very spoiled!!! She hardly ever sleeps in her crate....only on the weekends when I have to run an errand that she can't go along with.... otherwise, she sleeps in the bed with me and my boyfriend!!!

Scarlet goes on road trips with my parents and we just got back from taking her on vacation with us. Something that Scarlet doesn't know what it is is the doorbell.... kinda nice though that she doesn't bark when it rings. She is not scared of thunder, lightening, or fireworks. On the 4th of July, she sat outside and watched us shoot off some fireworks. We can tell that someone has abused her in the past....when anyone reaches up with their hand to grab something off the kitchen counter or raise an arm up to do something she ducks and she bats her eyes like she is just waiting to get hit.....so sad. You would think by now she knows we love her and aren't going to hit her. Well, guess I should quit rambling for now. I wanted to say hi from Scarlet and I and let you know how she is doing. Hope all is well at the rescue shelter and Scarlet wants to send lots kisses to her dog friends there!!! Woof woof lick lick kiss kiss slop slop from Scarlet!!!! Sydney Dean

So Sad | Looking for Love

How can people be so cruel and heartless...? Scarlet was brought to the humane society with a 22lb chain hooked into her neck with a metal clip that pierced through her skin to hold the chain in place. Somehow, some way, she escaped and found her way to a kind citizen who wasn't scared of her because of her breed, but saw an animal that deserved to be helped.

Scarlet is now safe with us - The metal hook and chain has been removed from her neck and the wound is healing well.... She should have very little scaring left in no time.

Now, after such abuse, Scarlet would have all the reasons in the world to hate people, but it is very much the contrary. She looooves people.... In fact, she wiggled and kissed everyone that came to see her at the shelter to help remove the chain... Not once did she show aggression toward anyone handling her. Scarlet just sat on deathrow happy to be loved and resigned to her faith. At least she was not being abused and neglected anymore.

Sweet Scarlet | "I Love You!"

We read her story on the internet and even though we knew that she could be hard to place, we decided to welcome her in our program to show her that not all humans were as bad as the ones she encountered before her rescue.

Loving Eyes | Funny Face | Cute Profile

Scarlet had been waiting all her life for a kind touch and gentle petting - She loves the attention. She still seems a little surprised to be treated with kindness but is quickly getting used to it. She is discovering hugs, kisses and cuddling and enjoying every minute of it. Now, we realize that there are a looooot of Pit Bulls hoping for a chance to find love in the Midwest and not a lot of homes available for these sweethearts. Scarlet has a lot of competition and we believe it will be hard for her to be noticed because she is not very flashy looking and not very photogenic. We hope with all our heart that this won't stop anyone from wanting to meet her. Her true beauty is in her heart and trust me, she has a beautiful heart. Please don't let looks alone be the main factor in your decision to welcome a dog in your home. Scarlet is so very deserving. Dogs like her have been waiting all their life for what you have to offer. Give Scarlet a chance to discover the good life in your care.
