Story: It only took one night and a day for him to prove himself far too smart and too loving of a dog to just be euthanised for no fault of his own than lacking a home. After being pulled from AC, Smiles was neutered and then placed into a foster home.
Happy Boy | Goofy Face | Too Cute
Foster Situation: Smiles lives with my husband and I, our 8 month old son, and a one year old female pit bull. Smiles loves to sit by the baby and keep him company. He seems used to baby noises and they do not bother him. We know that Smiles grew up with kids and babies so we are confident he is fine with them.
Proud Boy | Kisses anyone? | Sitting Pretty | Too Much
Smiles does seem to do well with young and friendly female dogs. We have been told by previous owners that Smiley lived with a female dog before. That said, we think he would do best in a home as the only pet.
He isn't great on a leash yet as he is VERY strong, but we will be working with a gentle leader and teaching him how to go on walks when he completes his heartworm treatment. Smiles is a great rider in the car and he sleeps in his crate in our bedroom at night without being whiny or making a mess.
Smiley The Smiler | Goofball | Irresistible
Training: Smiles is VERY eager to please. He knows sit, stay, lay down and roll over, and performs them all on the first request. He will also stop what he's doing as soon as you say "No". You don't even have to raise your voice to him. He also walks into his crate whenever you say "kennel." Smiley obviously lives to please and is never disobedient in any way. He is also easily pleased with a belly rub! This boy is never defiant in anyway! That said, Smiley-Boy has a high prey drive and will chase cats, squirrels, etc. He would do best in a yard with a good, tall privacy fence.
Personality: This is a very hard question to answer for no other reason than there are so many good things to say about him. He has the most loving smile I have ever seen in a dog. He is never grumpy or aggressive to anyone at all. I have tested him to the max! I have pulled him across the room by his tail. Picked him up by his feet and have had my hand in his mouth twice a day for meds when we first rescued him. He just stood there while getting a much-needed bath.
When you start petting him if you start down his side, he will be on his back in a heartbeat for a belly rub. He is truly a people lover! He even loves the mailman! Needless to say he is very well behaved. He loves to walk around the house just checking everything out. He really loves to get visitors, never has he barked at a person. All in all he is a pretty calm dog but not lazy. He is not protective of his food bowl or bones because he allows me to take food or a bone out of his mouth without even a growl. If you are looking for a true loving friend, Smiles is the one! If you want a guard dog go look somewhere else because he might look mean but doesn't have a mean bone in his body! Smiley Loves Belly Rubs!
Roll | And Roll | And roll again.... Smiles is a happy goofball who has NO idea of how big he really is! He loves to crawl in your lap and get loved on, but he also loves to run around and be silly. He has the cutest gallop and loves to do little play bows. He loves everyone and jumps on visitors sometimes out of excitement, but easily corrects when you say "down". I can not stress enough that if you are looking for a guard dog, LOOK ELSEWHERE!! Smiles may look intimidating, but he is a true people lover and a big softie. His favorite place to be is plopped down on his back at your feet getting a belly rub.
Smiley is a big boy, very strong and muscular.
Hey you, Yes you, please adop me..!
Best Attribute: This is an easy one! He has an irresistible smile! Whenever left alone and he sees you coming he will cinch his teeth and pull his lips way back so you can see his toothy smile, then wag his butt off!
This loving boy is the epitome of the term "gentle giant." He is so quick to trust and love despite his hard life and he is truly grateful to be around people who love him and to have a warm, safe place to live. He is such a clown and a cuddler -- His eyes shine with appreciation for every little thing that you do for him. And of course, you can't forget that smile!! Who could resist that big teethy grin and that wiggly butt?? Smiles loves humans and is very quick to trust.
Will you love me forever?
Smiles is Heartworm Positive. We are currently trying to raise the money to save his life one more time. Once treated, Smiles should keep no long term sequels and will live a healthy life. UPDATE: March 2th: A HUGE Thank you to Roma Alexander few her precious donation that allowed us to save Smiles's life :-)
Smiles had her treatment several weeks ago and the nasty worms are now gone. He is ready to "smile" at life with all his heart.
Heartworms Are a Serious Threat - In 2004, more than 250,000 dogs in the United States tested positive for heartworms. Click the map to see if you live in a "problem area".
