February 28, 2007 Post Adoption Update:
Tilly is thriving!! She is about 16 weeks old, the vet thinks. She'll only be 30-35 pounds fully grown, which is perfectly fine with me as I have a smaller house and that size dog will fit here very well.
Tilly got over her pnueumonia finally, and then came up with mange! We've beat the mange finally...took a LONG TIME. She has emerged from the pneumonia with a collapsing trachea, however, which is sad, but we will manage to live with it - it's not too severe, but definitely audible. Maybe when she's fully grown, we can get a stint for her windpipe so she'll be able to breathe normally for the rest of her days. Currently, the collapsing trachea is not hampering her puppy-ness. She's quite a willful young girl, and VERY SMART. But still every bit Mommy's baby, and loves to sit on my lap and cuddle in the mornings!! :) Once she has her booster shots (in a couple of weeks), I plan to take her to puppy classes to get fully socialized. Because of her illnesses, we've been in a kind of quarantine for the past two months. So her experience with other dogs has been limited to her new doggie friends who live behind us...touching noses through the fence. She's great on a leash, and I come home from work every day at lunch to walk her and go potty. We have tried to curb the play biting, but Tilly is VERY tactile with her mouth. She eats everything in the backyard because that's how she "feels" everything. She is beginning to understand that biting for play is not acceptable, but it took two months to work into that. It's a daily struggle, and believe me, it's not because she doesn't have enough TOYS to chew on! :)
I got a fence put around the backyard, and she LOVES to run and play back there. We haven't mastered going up the back deck stairs yet, but working on it.
Tilly is a WONDERFUL dog and has learned almost all of her commands: sit, stay, down, come on, drop it, etc. She still has trouble with "drop it" unless I offer her treats. :) She is really smart about turning the tables and getting what she wants. Recently she lost 5 teeth!! New ones came in to replace them overnight. Since she's been teething, my vet told me that she will hold her ears funny...which she is indeed doing lately. Thus the picture - she reminds me of Lucille Ball when she holds her ears like that! :)
Tilly is a beauty, and her name (that MPR gave her) means strength, which is absolutely PERFECT for her. I am blessed to be her Mommy.
Thank you for following up with me. I appreciate all that MPR has done for us! Tell Henry Sanchez (her foster daddy) hello for us and please forward this to him!
