Joe was brought into our program very underweight. He has been filling out nicely with good meals and peanut butter Kongs. His scruffy "dog pound" fur is being replaced by a beautifully shiny coat. He is on his way to becoming the handsome boy he was meant to be!
Foster Situation: While at MPR's mini-shelter Joe was introduced to Melina and the two of them get along great. We think he would do well in a home with a compatible female. Joe is now fostered in a home with two adults and an Olde English Bulldogge. At this time he and the resident bulldog have not been formally introduced and still on a crate/rotate schedule. Joe's disposition is very sweet. He is a mild mannered, polite dog and when his housemate tries to start controversy, he will do his best to avoid a conflict. Joe is potty trained and has not tried to mark anything either. His foster home is in a rural area without fencing. For exercise he is walked on a leash. He is learning leash manners but is very easy to correct and seems to be interested in doing what is asked of him. Cattle seem to have Joe puzzled and while he shows interest in them it is not in an aggressive way. He is just trying to figure out what these big things are. He will stop to ponder them but he does not charge or pull towards them and will quickly start walking again when asked to. (Good Boy!) Joe sleeps in his crate at night. He is a very good boy and has slept through the night even on his first evening here. While Joe will go outside for his leash walk and potty breaks, he does not really care to spend a lot of time outdoors. Even on the few nice days we have had he will only want to be outdoors for so long. When he has had enough he will try to direct you back to the door. Joe is a pretty laid back kind of guy who seems perfectly happy hanging out indoors. Because of his preferences and disposition, I believe he would make a great dog for an apartment or a person who can not keep up with the physical demands of a more active dog. I can not say how he would be with small children as we do not have any in our home but he is a very mild mannered and gentle dog.

Training: I have been working on basic obedience and leash manners with Joe. Because we go in and out a door on a leash, we are also learning the command "Wait" so his foster mom can open or shut the door without a struggle. He seems to want to please his people and likes to be rewarded with a "Good Boy" when he is good. The only time Joe has been stubborn is when he is told to get off the furniture - he really likes to sit on the sofa and helps himself when you are not looking. :) He will comply when he knows you expect him to get down although he does not look too happy about leaving such a comfy place!

Personality: From what I have seen, Joe is a submissive, sweet dog. He is generally very kind and polite. He seems to really try his best to be a good dog and loves to follow you around the house like a little shadow. He does not seem to have a good understanding of what a dog toy is but he is learning by watching the resident dog playing with hers. He has decided Nylabone toys are pretty great and is happy to chew on them when encouraged. Kongs are fun too because they seem to magically grow peanut butter inside of them when it is kennell time! I think he is a smart little guy as he can quickly pick up on things and seems willing to just go with the flow instead of questioning authority. Praise is a great motivator for him and you can see his smoky colored eyes light up when he knows he has made you happy.
