Open Letter to Michael Vick

Dear Mr. Vick,

It would have been very simple to write a brief mention of you, noting that I hope you get the book thrown at you, hoping you get abused and beaten in prison, tortured and eventually left to die just like the animals on whom you wagered, but what would that accomplish?

Rather, I write this, not so much that I hope you'll read it, but rather, on the chance that millions of other people will see it, and feel the anger, the absolute rage, the disgust that I share the same title as "human being" with something as foul as yourself.

I write this because you've failed, Mr. Vick. You've failed as a person. You've failed as an example to children and adults the world over. You've failed as a sportsman. You've failed as a human being.

You had everything. You had the life. You had the image. You had the endorsements, you had the backing of the fans. You literally had the world at your feet. You had the gift of being one of the most talented athletes in the world, good enough to earn a $100 million dollar contract with the Atlanta Falcons. You had "Star Quarterback" labeled on you wherever you went.

In fact, the only thing you seemed to be missing was compassion.

You took everything that you had, and rather than do something good with it, thought it better to kill animals for your own amusement. I'll say that again. Mr Vick, you are an animal murderer. You sir, murder animals, and you do it under the guise of "sport". There is nothing sporting about making animals kill each other for your own personal amusement, Mr. Vick.

You sicken me.

For what reason, Mr. Vick, would you do this? You didn't need the money. You could have gone to Vegas if you felt the need to gamble. You could have taken drugs if you needed a high. Instead, you felt the need to murder animals. Animals that had no ability to save themselves. They couldn't call their assistants to bring the limo around when they wanted to go home. They didn't have the ability to call a time-out and regroup. They had to fight until they were dead, or so bloody and injured that they prayed for death. And you gave them death. According to the Associated Press, your dog fighting ring allegedly executed underperforming pit bulls by hanging, electrocution or other brutal means, including slamming them into the ground until they were dead.

Well done, Mr. Vick. Your mother must be so proud of you. The NFL must be thrilled to have you among their ranks. Except that you were uninvited to training camp. So it looks like they're not.

With a $100 million dollar contract, you couldn't purchase one person to be a part of your entourage with any soul? Anyone who could have said, you know, not only is this illegal, but it's also terribly cruel. Why would you want to get involved in this?

And don't give me any stories about how it's what they do in the projects, or it's how you were raised, or it's your culture, or your socio-influence. I simply don't care. Hurting animals, deliberately, and for your own sick pleasure is wrong. Nothing you can say, can ever, ever, justify that. Someone in your camp asked how this is any different than a celebrity getting busted for having Cocaine in her pockets... I'll explain how, Mr. Vick. If a celebrity wants to blow lines until his or her heart explodes, he or she is free to do that. In fact, if they die, it's probably more proof that Darwin was right. They're not torturing and murdering animals in the process. You, however, hurt those that did nothing to you. You didn't hurt yourself when you forced animals to fight to their deaths. You didn't hurt yourself when you shoved electrical wires up the anus's of dogs who didn't perform "well enough" for you.

But now, Mr. Vick, you've hurt yourself.

Nike has dropped you. Reebok has dropped you. Upper Deck has dropped you and removed your cards from unsold packs. No training camp for you. Your "buddy", another heartless being, Tony Taylor, turned on you, copped a plea, and is helping the government build a case against you.

Your teammates are saying very scripted things, like "he hasn't been convicted yet", and "it's an unfortunate situation." You know what those lines are called in the PR world? They're called "distancing one's self from the situation".

How does it feel to be a pariah?

Chances are really, really good that you're going to wind up in jail, Mr. Vick. And it's not going to be a quick 15-day-sentence, either. You're looking at hard time, Mr. Vick. Years, possibly. Your career is more than likely over. I mean, honestly who would want you, knowing what you do behind closed doors for amusement?

They say the universe tends to work itself out as it should. Looks to me, as your friends turn on you, as all your sources of income dry up, and as you're left out to rot, on your own, with no friends, no team, and no entourage to back you, that the universe is working out just the way it should, indeed. Perhaps in prison, you'll learn something about compassion. Perhaps it'll come at the hands of someone bigger than you one night when the guards aren't there to protect you. Perhaps someone with an electric plug will teach you about compassion, about love, about feelings, about caring. Or perhaps you'll be in so much pain, you'll be unable to learn. And then you too, just like the dogs you murdered, will pray for death. But then, it seems to me, as you take stock of the complete one-hundred-eighty degree turn your life has taken in the past fourteen days, you might already be doing that.

URGENT PLEA!!!  FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED ...

BACON HAS BEEN DUMPED!!!

Abandoned by owner too young to take responsibility of a dog, Bacon is now staying in a kennel at a local boarding facility until he can find a home or foster home. Boarding is $50.00 a week and we are broke due to all the puppies coming our way recently.

The dog has officially been dumped so either we pay for his boarding or he is going to Animal Control to be euthanized. We are seriously running out of funds... Please help...

UPDATE 08/23/07: Thank you LuAnn Tauchman and Thomas Leonard. Your precious help with boarding fee is helping us keep Bacon safe while we try to find him a home or foster home.

HELP OUR SWEET APHRODITE

We only had foster homes available for puppies but how could we ever pull them from their mom and leave her at the shelter to die?

Aphrodite is currently kept in a temporary foster home but can't stay there as they are over the petlimit. Aphrodite is at risk of being confiscated by animal control and sent back to the shelter. In addition, this sweet girl is Heartworm positive We have received the funding for her treatment (thank you Roma Alexander) but Aphrodite needs a calm and safe environment for her convalescence. Being boarding in a kennel is not suitable for a dog going through Heartworm treatment. Please look into her eyes and let them win your heart...

OPEN YOUR HEART TO JADE

Another sweet mama dog who was rescued from hell. Her physical condition indicates that Blue Jade was a neglected and unloved breeding Machine. We promised her she would never go through this again.

Blue Jade was bailed out from the shelter to honor the memory of another mistreated mama dog we lost in august. Sadly, Jade's foster home didn't work out as she needs a home with no cats. So Jade is now in boarding and our funds are very low. In addition, Jade is also Heartworm positive We have received the funding for her treatment (thank you Carrie Wilkerson) but now Jade needs to find a calm and safe environment for her convalescence.

Sad News, 08/04/07: Despite all our efforts, we have lost one of our mama dogs. Bellamie lost her fight to live on august 3rd. We are deeply sadden by her loss, but so grateful to everyone who donated generously. We were able to give Bellamie to best of care while in our program and to make every attempts to save her life.

Bellamie memoriam

Bellamie was hospitalized when she passed away. This sweet mama dog was the innocent victim of neglect, abuse, over breeding, and the difficult conditions dogs must endure when staying at our local pounds.

A new mama dog was saved from the shelter in Bellamie's memory.... Blue Jade (see above) will now be loved.

MPR BLOG August 2007   Those Vicious monsters...

I remember standing around in the hallway with a group of acquaintances in high school when the topic of pit bulls came up. There had been a pit bull attack on the news the day before. None of us had ever seen one in person, just the snarling mean looking dogs they showed on the news. A girl happened to hear us and came over to defend the dogs she loved so much. She said she grew up with pit bulls and the news made them out to be monsters. GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

I don't remember exactly what was said but we thought we knew everything about pit bulls.... That they were all mean vicious killers. The girl left practically in tears. I now know how she feels...

I always loved dogs but wasn't allowed to have one growing up so when I finally bought a house, I looked for a dog to adopt. There was no way I would ever consider adopting a pit bull at that time, especially since I thought they were dangerous and I had a child. I saw a "Bulldog mix" on Petfinder and drove two hours to the animal shelter hoping that she was still there. She was.

She was stocky and brindle with a docked tail and a big head. 80Lbs of muscle. It was love at first sight. I took her home that day and named her Dutchess. She was a big sweetheart. Great with my son, and always wanting her belly rubbed. Two days later I took her to my vet for a checkup. The vet told me she looked like an American Staffordshire Terrier. Well, I had never heard of one of those before so I looked it up on the internet... I was horrified.... I kept looking at her in disbelief.... She can't be... One of the breeds referred to as a Pit Bull.

I joined about four online pit bull forums that night afraid of what might happen if I kept her. I also ran out and bought a book on the breed. I started to relax after seeing tons of pictures of pit bulls and kids, pit bulls with other animals, pit bulls just being.... Regular happy playful dogs.

I read about how pit bulls passed breeds such as Collies, Dalmatians and Cocker Spaniels in a national temperament test. I read about how pit bulls are misidentified in many of these news stories such as a recent "Pit Bull Attack" headline that turned out to be a Chow. I read about how bad owners are the ones that are causing this pit bull hysteria. I was shocked.

There were search and rescue dogs that were pit bulls, even therapy dogs... I thought about the girl in high school and how mean we were to her. She was the one who knew what she was talking about..

After posting pictures of my "Bulldog mix" on the forums, it turns out she was actually an Olde English Bulldog. After weeks of researching pit bulls however, I decided that I wanted one and got back on Petfinder to look.

I saw an "urgent" listing for a 3 legged "pit bull" named Kane. He had been hit by a car and his owners couldn't pay the vet bills for him so the vet took him to the pound. He was on death row. I immediately contacted the shelter and three weeks later, he was home. I renamed him King.

When my mother found out that I adopted a pit bull she threatened to call child protection. King has since changed her mind and the minds of others. I will always continue to defend the pit bull breed... and my mother loves King...

CENTERFOLD August 2007   Sweet Little Honeybee

Honeybee

How can you not fall in love with this "honey" of a sweet little girl? Honey has a very quirky, fun personality.

Honeybee is an itty bitty pitty. She is completely full grown and around 35 lbs. She is smaller in height than that of a 6 month old puppy. She's the only pittie we know who is a lap dog that can actually fit in your lap :-) She is also the sweetest dog ever.

It's as though she's making up for all the attention she craved for so long that she never got. Honey does the "food dance" at meal times where she dances and wiggles her little butt so hard she can't even walk straight. She's a very unique special little girl who deserves a loving home to make up for all that she lost in the first couple years of her life.

Will that loving home be yours?

FEATURED VOLUNTEER AUGUST 2007   Christy Baker

Meet MPR's Fantastic Volunteer, Christy!

Christy is MPR's “Foster Coordinator”, and does an excellent job of keeping track of vet records, sending out congratulation letters to new adoptive families along with a follow-up thank you e-mail and letting them know how to help in the future. She also keeps track of donations received and sends out thank you letters to MPR's generous donators and sponsors.

If that isn't enough, she helps to organize monthly MPR events such as the Home Show and Gay Pride, as well as attends them. When she goes to events she will pick up a foster or a courtesy listing to take with her since she's unable to foster because she lives in Independence which prohibits pit bulls within city limits due to the ban passed a year ago. She has two dogs at home, a Pug named Zoe and a Beagle Doxi mix named Weebles, whom she loves very much.

Christy 's such an asset to MPR and we are so very fortunate to have her onboard. Thank you Christy!

  HAPPY ENDINGS  July 2007

IN LOVING MEMORY.....  Little Eva, DOB Unknown - July 23, 2007

Bitter sweet ending...

Innocents awaited her fate as the time grew later on the day she and her brother were scheduled to be euthanized. Frail and scared, this green eyed beauty kept her spirits as her time expired. Sadly, this is the story of hundreds of innocent pit bulls in our area. Some confiscated on animal cruelty charges – many taken from their home because they lived in a city where they have been wrongly charged with being vicious killers... Even little puppies like little Eva – Others turned over by their irresponsible owners that purchased a cute puppy for all the wrong reasons.

The green eyed beauty was named Eva and her brother, Drizzle. These two puppies were spotted while a few volunteers were pulling two emaciated, nursing females and their litters of puppies from a local Animal Control Facility. Sadly, the mistreatment of these animals does not always stop when they are taken in by local shelters. Low on budget, city pounds are often not able to provide the animals the medical care or a sanitary environment they need. Although Eva was rescued from death row, she became a victim of the shelter's difficult living conditions. In addition to a lethal virus contracted while "doing her time", Eva developed a sever case of kennel cough while suffering from malnutrition and several parasites.

Her immune system was compromised and this sweet puppy was simply too weak to fight.. Despite all our efforts to save her life, Eva passed away four days after leaving the shelter. Even though her fate was not what Missouri PitBull had envisioned, we find peace in knowing that she experienced love and comfort before passing instead of dying unknown, unwanted and scared at the mercy of a needle in a cold and unfriendly environment. Eva will always be in our hearts.

"Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight. " - Albert Schweitzer
