Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bulls
Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

The sorrow of Mama dogs.... |

| People often talk about the joy of watching the miracle of birth of puppies. This is particularly disturbing since we know only 1 in 600 Pit Bull born in this world will find a loving home.
We know also, that nothing is more difficult than to find a home for a "mama dog". We currently have several brave mothers in our program who are hoping with all their heart they will soon find someone to love. Sugar Pie, Baraka, Lulu, HoneyBee, Nakoma.....
Some people naively believe that a female dog should have at least one litter before being spayed. There is absolutely no justification to that belief. In fact, the longer you wait before spaying a female, the greater the chances she will get cancer later in life.
A pregnancy is extremely hard on a female dog. MPR has rescued countless mama dogs who had given literally all they had to their pups and were on the brinks of death when discovered. It takes months for a female to recover physically after a pregnancy. And if you think you are doing the dog a favor by letting her experience the joy of motherhood, please think again..
Like humans, canines need a strong social structure to thrive and survive. In the wild, puppies stay under the protection of the pack and their parents until they are old enough to survive on their own.
|
Only then, when the dogs are about a year old, some youngsters will leave the pack and move on, though many canines stay with their family for their entire life. No six, seven or height week old puppy is strong enough to survive on its own. The dogs know that. Pulling an 8 week old puppy from a mama dog is like expecting a 2 year old baby to move out of his parents home, get a job and find an apartment.
We are messing with nature when we remove puppies from their mother and siblings and place them in a home at 8 weeks old. Dogs do not understand that we will be there to care for them. In the puppy's mind, he or she will die away from his "canine family", hence why puppies scream bloody murder the first few nights we bring them home.
As for the mother, she has to witness her pups disappear one by one helplessly and has no clue what will happen to them. We cant explain to her that the pups have found a new home and everything is ok. She believes they are getting lost and dying. Think about the emotional stress this causes a loving mother...
With Pet overpopulation causing more death than happy endings, and knowing that mama dogs suffer a great deal physically and emotionally when having and losing puppies, do we really need to add more puppies to this world so we can witness the miracle of birth? The miracle of birth when it comes to pets these days is simply a step towards euthanasia.
Please don't breed or buy while shelter pets die, Please Spay or Neuter your pet...... And please, please adopt a homeless Mama dog this month! |
MPR holds Adoption Events on a regular basis to allow the public to meet some of our dogs, talk to our volunteers about Pit Bull ownership, ask any question and spend individual time with a dog they might be interested to adopt.
Please email us if you want to know which dog will be attending next event |

Proud mama, Sugar Pie |

|
Meet Sugar Pie, our brave mama dog who courageously delivered "12" puppies while being held on "deathrow" in a shelter that has a non-adoption policy on Pit Bulls.
Sugar Pie gave birth the day before her euthanasia schedule..
The pups would have been killed along with her... Talk about a way to arrive in our world..... Our group was so devastated about this terrible situation that we decided to bite the bullet and rescue the whole little gang.
|
Sugar Pie puppies are long gone.... All of them found loving homes last Summer and are living the great life. . |
|
Mama however, is still waiting. She's been waiting ONE LONG YEAR....Wont you please open your heart to this sweet, sweet dog.... |

Super mom, Jessika Ortego |

| Mother of two legged kids, a dog adopted from MPR last year, a few cats, several lizards, reptiles, fish, ferrets and an active foster mom for MPR. That's what we call a SUPER MOM!
Jessika's place has proven to be one of the best foster home to send young puppies in need of socialization. When you adopt a dog that has been fostered by Jessika and family, you KNOW that dog has been socialized to the bone and put through as various pet situations as a dog can be. We don't know how Jessika does it, but she manages her busy life like a pro. Not only is she a dedicated foster mom, but she also finds the time to help at Adoption Events, update our MY Space page, screen applications, and much more!
In this month of celebration of Motherhood, we had to give a special kudos to this super mom and very dedicated MPR volunteer!

Meet our new adoptables |
Our recent adoptions made room to save the life of new dogs. Visits to KCMO Animal Control facility are always very difficult. Dozens and dozens of Pit Bulls of all age, shape and color, sitting hopeless on deathrow, for having committed no other crime than being born the wrong breed in the wrong hands. We had room for one dog on our last trip but cam back with two....
