SNKC CAN HELP!

Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

 URGENT PLEA  Winter 2008/2009

MPR has recently received several requests to assist dogs that are in dire need of help. Some of those dogs are currently outside in the freezing temperature and don't have adequate shelter. Pit Bull dogs DO NOT do well in cold weather as they don't have the coat to handle temperature below freezing! They are suffering just like we are when we go outside in such weather...

Many of those dogs have nothing but cheap non-insulated dog houses for shelter... Some have nothing at all.... Many are starving or malnourished and don't have any fat to protect them against the elements. Big chains prevent them to seek better refuge or try to find more food to eat....

There are several cases where the owners are willing to relinquish the dogs to rescue but MPR is TOO FULL to help!!! Right now more than ever, MPR needs everyone to rally and come together to change the life of those poor dogs, victim of man's cruelty and ignorance... Help us show those dogs that not all humans are bad.... Become a Helping Hand

  FOSTER HOMES NEEDED  December 2008

Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month

I Need A Foster Home Please
I Need A Foster Home Please
I Need A Foster Home Please I Need A Foster Home Please

Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.

We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand

As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.

Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home

Protect Your Pet from Winter's Woes - As the cold winter chill descends upon us for another year, it's worth remembering that we aren't the only ones who feel the bite of Jack Frost nipping at our noses.

In many areas, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following these simple guidelines provided by HSUS. More Cold Weather Protection for Pets and Winterizing Your Pit Bull information.

Little Litter Dog: Pit Bull Doing Its Part to Keep City Clean - You sometimes can't help but attract attention if you're a dog... "No, she doesn't get ice cream if she does a good job," Anne Vaini tells the three kiddos clustered around her dog, Emma. But when you're a dog that picks up litter from the sidewalk, runs to the nearest garbage can and drops it in, you're pretty much guaranteed instant fame.
Mortgage meltdown results in pets going to pound - Over the past eight months, shelters around the county have seen more animals turned in because their owners have lost their homes or jobs. The shelters are also straining to meet a sharp increase in requests from people who are struggling just to provide food for their pets. Information on assistance can be found HERE.
Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker - PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel." The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knife point Monday afternoon.
How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of.

Neglected dogs total at 106 - NEWKIRK, Oklahoma - Officials say they have counted a total of 106 pit bulls they discovered at a rented farm near Newkirk. The 100 adult dogs and seven puppies (one died Wednesday night) were discovered by the Kay County Sheriff's Department after receiving an anonymous tip that they dogs were being abused or neglected. A large number of the dogs had been chained to logs and some were found locked in a barn without food or water. Jerry Southern, 32, was arrested. He told authorities that he shows and sells the dogs, but no one was buying them. Kelley said unrelated animal cruelty charges in Kansas prohibit Southern from owning pit bills. He said he suspects Southern rented the farm 10 miles south of the state line to escape the scrutiny of Kansas authorities. The dogs remain at the farm. The sheriff's office is asking for donations of straw and food for the dogs. Anyone willing to help is asked to call the Kay County sheriff at 580-362-2517. Read more HERE and HERE...
Pit bull helps children learn to read - DOWNEY, CA - Ward Elementary School has a new teacher's aide this year – and she has four legs and fur. Rowdy is a 14-year-old pit bull that has been helping children with reading difficulties read. "We love Rowdy and this has been amazing for the kids," said Ward Elementary School Principal Jennifer Robbins. The children take turns reading to Rowdy who simply listens and laps up the attention. "This doesn't help the children learn reading strategies, but it does help them with their confidence. They are taking more risks trying out new words because they like reading to Rowdy," Robbins said.
Pit bull mix survives attack with ER care, lots of love - HUNTSVILLE, AL - Slugger, a 2-year-old pit bull mix also known as Rags, has lived at Huntsville Animal Services since September after he barely survived a brutal attack with a baseball bat that killed his sibling. On Sept. 19, an unidentified resident of a northeast Huntsville neighborhood phoned Animal Services about two dogs being beaten with a bat by their owner.
Dog fighting Subculture Is Taking Hold in Texas - HOUSTON, TX - Over 17 months, agents from the Texas state police penetrated a murky and dangerous subculture in East Texas, a world where petty criminals, drug dealers and a few people with ordinary jobs shared a passion for watching pit bulls tear each other apart in a 12-foot-square pit. Investigators found that dog fighting was on the rise in Texas and was much more widespread than they had expected. The ring broken up here had links to dog fighting organizations in other states and in Mexico, suggesting an extensive underground network of people devoted to the activity, investigators said. The investigation here led to the indictments of 55 people and the seizing of 187 pit bulls, breaking up what officials described as one of the largest dog fighting rings in the country.
Police make arrest in pit bull case - PADUCAH, KY - At about 7:15 p.m. Friday, the McCracken and Graves County sheriff's departments arrested Thomas E. Timmons, 30, of Symsonia in connection with the dumping of 11 dead pit bull dogs into Clark's River off Bryant Ford Road on Nov. 6.
Surviving pit bulls' future uncertain - People across nation send aid for 102 abused dogs - NEWKIRK, OK - More than a week after hunters stumbled across 106 emaciated and dying pit bulls at this remote farmhouse, the dogs are still here, in wire pens and plastic barrels. ...The 102 surviving dogs now have food, water, shelter and straw -- and an outpouring of support from across the nation. But their future is uncertain.
Kennel where pit bulls seized called a major breeding center - MILLERS CREEK, NC - Authorities have seized 127 pit bulls in Wilkes County at what the Humane Society of the United States says is one of the nation's largest breeding operations for fighting dogs. Investigators spent more than 14 hours in a raid Wednesday at Wildside Kennels at 5636 Mertie Road in the mountains of northwest Wilkes County. The raid capped a three-year investigation by the Humane Society of the United States, in cooperation with Wilkes County authorities. Arrested were the owner of Wildside Kennels, Edward Anthony Faron, 61; his son Donni Juan Casanova, 18; and Amanda Grace Lunsford, 25. They were each charged with one felony count of dog fighting and baiting. Each posted a $2,500 bond and was released. Other charges are pending, authorities said. HUSU Article

BSL NEWS

West Liberty, Iowa - An emotional outcry from pit bull owners drives council to drop breed ban - A large and emotional crowd packed council chambers last week, each speaking out on behalf of the dogs they love. More than 20 concerned pit bull owners came to the meeting of the West Liberty City Council Tuesday, Dec. 2, to plead with council to cease its discussion of a breed-specific ordinance which would ban pit bulls from city limits. ...After the discussion, McFerren asked council how they would like to proceed. Councilors Tom Pace, Bill Cline, Jose Elizondo and Wickham each said they would not vote for a breed-specific ordinance but would like to look at the current vicious dog ordinance and make improvements to it. Hartman said he would like to continue research on BSL but believes looking at the current ordinance would probably be most beneficial. McFerren said council would no longer be looking at a breed-specific ordinance and the committee would move forward on improving the current vicious dog ordinance.

Perryville, MO - Breed ban removed from Perryville dog proposal - Perryville aldermen voted Tuesday to remove a breed-specific ban from a proposed dangerous dog ordinance. The city attorney will now formalize the ordinance's language and add elements pertaining to owner liability, Perryville Mayor Debbie Gahan said. The ordinance could come before the aldermen Dec. 16 for a final vote. The ordinance is not a ban but will rather define "vicious dog" and outline steps that will be taken if a dog is deemed vicious, she said.

Fayette, Missouri - Proposed animal ordinance debated by city council - Carol Leech, member of the animal ordinance committee, presented a draft animal ordinance which is aimed at addressing chronic vicious dog problems city residents have on occasion experienced. One key provision is a ban on new pit-bulls. A grandfather clause allows pet owners who already own pit bulls to keep their pets as long as the pit bulls are registered with the city and properly controlled. Two public hearings will be held to discuss the proposed ordinance. The council went ahead with the first reading of the proposed animal ordinance. A second reading is required before the ordinance becomes law. Council members will continue to discuss the issue with constituents before making a final decision. Citizens who have concerns with the proposed animal ordinance should contact their council person and attend the next council meeting, December 2nd. Please send your polite and respectful opposition by phoning city hall at 660-248-5246 or contacting the city clerk, Robin Overstreet at clerk@socket.net and click HERE for more information. The December 2nd council meeting is the last chance to stop this law.

Perryville, MO - Perryville council considering ban on pit bulls -The Perryville City Council held a public hearing Tuesday, November 18th to discuss the possibility of enacting an ordinance banning pit bulls. About 30 people attended the hearing and 16 stood up to voice their opinions on the potential breed ban, according to Perryville city clerk Tracy Prost. Only one of those people was in favor of the ban, she said. Please write the Mayor and City Council Members with polite and respectful opposition to a ban. See the code ordinances and minutes for more information.
Herculaneum, MO - Pit Bull Ban Proposed - The Herculaneum Board of Aldermen is working on an ordinance that would ban the ownership of pit bulls in the city limits. Contact information for the Mayor and Board of Aldermen can be found at the city website.

Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. Click HERE for more information.

Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Click HERE for more information.
Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. Click HERE for more information.

  CENTERFOLD  December 2008
 Sir Love-A-Lot

Meet our very charming Sir Lov-A-Lot who got his name because... Really, this boy is full of absolute love for human companionship!  We are so deeply saddened that Sir Lov-A-Lot has been waiting ONE LONG YEAR... being boarded … in a cage.... waiting for his forever home. He is confused as to why other dogs have gotten adopted and he hasn't. Frankly, we are confused too!  We just don't understand… he's simply the sweetest dog in our program! We have to wonder … is he being overlooked because of the scars? And if so, why would that matter so much? He’s not an ugly monster. Sir is a victim of human cruelty through no fault of his own. Everyone who meets him is amazed that a dog, who has obviously suffered a great deal at the hands of humans, can be so forgiving and so loving... How ironic that nobody will now welcome him home...

Oh, MPR volunteers have fallen in love with this sweetheart but we all have too many dogs to bring another one home. He has become very attached to some of the volunteers who visit him on a regular basis at the boarding faculty and literally craves to become someone’s cherished companion.

Dog of the Month
Sir is a goofy ham and has a wonderful, sunny disposition with people… He absolutely adores human company, no doubt about it! Finding the right situation for him has been a greater challenge that we ever thought possible. What can we do to convince a loving family to open their heart to this incredibly sweet, so resilient, loving and amazingly forgiving dog? Sir can’t wait to find his own person to love and worship.

While Sir soaks up human love by the buckets, we feel the best situation for him would be as the only pet in the household so he can have all your love and attention. If you can provide this for him, it’s no secret that he’ll pay you back a thousand fold! Just imagine coming home from a hard day at work and being greeted with so much love! Please give Sir Love-A-Lot the chance to win your heart! This dog has so much heart and he's looking for someone who has as much heart as he does. Sir is ready and waiting, so ... please open your heart and home to Sir this Christmas and start soaking up the love.

FEATURED VOLUNTEER December 2008
 Lindsey Hill

We're very pleased this month to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Lindsey who has been an MPR volunteer since the fall of 2005. MPR has the daunting task of matching responsible homes to the dogs in our program for the best and most successful fit possible. Sometimes that’s not always achievable and we’re faced with gently informing potential adopters and that’s where Lindsey steps in and her skills are put to work.

Lindsey has the most difficult MPR task of gently informing potential adopters that a dog they have shown an interest in or may have applied for would not be a suitable match for their current lifestyle or a best fit for the dog. Lindsey rises up to the challenge and is indeed unbeatable when it comes to handling the delivery of such difficult news to a potential adopter.

Lindsey is such an asset to MPR and we are so very thankful to have her onboard. Thank you Lindsey!

MPR also wishes at this time to extend heartfelt congratulations to Lindsey on the upcoming birth of her second child in a few days. MPR wishes Lindsey and family the very best that a new addition to their family has to offer.

   NEW BEGININGS November 2008

I've Been Adopted!
Longshot

HAPPY ENDINGS  Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers going.....

Hey Everyone,

You all played a big role in our ability to be together as a new little family and I really want to say thank you and let you know how much we appreciate all of your hard work and efforts.

Oliver (Jupiter) is a really happy and playful puppy, he loves to be playing all the time and enjoys being in a house with so many people around all the time to play with. He eats like someones going to steal his bowl away from him :) Housebreaking is going quite well he pee'd and pooped in his crate the first night, but that was the end of that. The last two nights he hasn't went potty in there at all, but really has to go in the morning! Oliver is a little nibbler and were working on cutting that out...lol, long battle I'm sure. (he's got some razor sharp lil teeth too) His Momma, Brittney loves to let him on the couch when Daddy's not around...shes a little cheater! Those beautiful little green puppy dog eyes are certainly hard to resist though. For some reason all the dogs he's been around are scared of him and run away, except his big sis Trixie, who has a hard time trying not to stomp on the little guy cause she gets so excited.

Here are a few pictures of Oliver, Myself, Brittney, and His Big Brother (My Son) Aaron. Thanks Again, I'll keep you updated,

Shane, Brittney, and Oliver

Dear Missouri Pit Bull Rescue, A couple of months ago we were fortunate enough to adopt a wonderful dog from your program; Kira (formerly Windchill) and wanted to send you an update on how she is doing. Kira has really come out of her shell and what a joy she has brought to our lives!!! Kira now knows how to sit, stay, down, roll over, crawl, and shake among other commands. She is currently enrolled in Canine Good Citizen class at the Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club. As well she is on the “no free lunch program” and responds very well to the structure this provides her with.

Some of her new favorite things she is enjoying with her forever home are going for walks, car rides, performing tricks and cuddling.

We wanted to thank you for giving us the opportunity to adopt such a great dog from your program. She has been as near to perfect as it gets!! There have been no accidents inside and she only plays with her toys. She loves chewing on her babies (stuffed animals) and kongs are always a special treat.

The structure that was provided in her foster home definitely carried over to her forever home and we are grateful for how well she was potty and crate trained as well as her kind demeanor around humans and other animals. She is a wonderful addition to our family. I have attached some pictures of Kira. Thank you again Brandon and Whitney
