| URGENT PLEA Winter 2008/2009 |
|
MPR has recently received several requests to assist dogs that are in dire need of help. Some of those dogs are currently outside in the freezing temperature and don't have adequate shelter. Pit Bull dogs DO NOT do well in cold weather as they don't have the coat to handle temperature below freezing! They are suffering just like we are when we go outside in such weather...
Many of those dogs have nothing but cheap non-insulated dog houses for shelter... Some have nothing at all.... Many are starving or malnourished and don't have any fat to protect them against the elements. Big chains prevent them to seek better refuge or try to find more food to eat....
|
|
There are several cases where the owners are willing to relinquish the dogs to rescue but MPR is TOO FULL to help!!! Right now more than ever, MPR needs everyone to rally and come together to change the life of those poor dogs, victim of man's cruelty and ignorance... Help us show those dogs that not all humans are bad.... Become a Helping Hand |

| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED January 2009 |
|
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month |
Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.
We have several programs available. Every penny counts! ! Become a Helping Hand |
|
As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.
Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home |

Late one Saturday night out Christmas shopping with my husband and best friend, it became increasingly blustery and fridgid. We rushed to the car with our shopping cart full of bags, unlocked the doors and we all three jumped in~started the engine and cranked the heat. As we sat there shaking and anticipating the warm air, when turned to each other and asked "who's gonna get the bags?".
As we where pulling out of the parking lot of the retail store I decided to ask this question of them..."What if you were a chained dog that was without shelter, your coat was short and you were thin from poor nutrition and you were out on a night like this?" "What would you do?"
My husband said he would bite the owner who left him out. But, the owner was no where around for you to retaliate... He said he would bite the owner when he came back to feed him. But, the owner doesn't come back for days... |
I told him, "Imagine being that chained dog on this blustery night. But the worst thing about it is that you live through it only to lay out there to experience another fridgid night." A tear came to my eyes as I knew that there were, at that very moment, many dogs going through that exact torture.
This January as the temperatures plummet and the heat flows through our homes, there are dogs who are bracing for another torturous season of cold, wind and snow. These poor pets have been doomed to live out their existence on a chain by their captors. There are dogs who exist only to walk circles around a stake that holds the other end of their lead so that they cannot escape the suffering. These poor dogs are not welcome into the house to escape the pain of the wind that cuts right through their bodies.
As we read this and we look down at our feet and see our loyal dog laying there and think 'That would never be my dog!' Look even further past that and think 'What can I do to make a difference this winter in a suffering dogs life?' |
 |
 |
You can:
Donate unwanted blankets or towels to your local Shelter or Rescue group.
Donate straw to a chained dog to help him keep the heat he generates from his own body.
Donate "insulated" dog houses to programs such as "SNKC Outreach".
Donate money to your Rescue groups so that they may help dogs that need it.
Adopt a homeless dog and give him/her a chance at the 'Good' life that so many poor dogs are denied
Educate your family and friends about the importance of not leaving your dogs to live out their existence on a chain...
|
And most importantly, report abuse or neglect of a chained dog that does not have adequate shelter or food and water. Dogs can't escape their chain to find better refuge or more food but a concerned individual can quite often make the difference between life and death for these animals. You can make a difference for chained dogs in your community.

January 26, 2009 (CHICAGO) - Canine Cops help Police - When we think of police canine units, the breed that most commonly comes to mind is the German shepherd. But rookie canines on the job now are anything but ordinary. ... The two newest members of the Cook County Sheriff's K9 unit are unique and are already performing beyond expectations. The K9 unit consists of a variety of dogs, including bloodhounds and German shepherds, but the most recent member of the force is a very loving, very friendly pit bull. Video included with article. |

WICHITA, KS - Wichita Considers Pit Bull Ban - On Tuesday morning, the city council appeared to not have enough support to move forward with a comprehensive pit bull ban in Wichita. But a majority of council members would like to see tougher restictions on the breed. ...Staff will come back to the council in a few months with a final recommendation. Further Reading ...Wichita Re-Visits Pit Bull Ownership Laws |
WICHITA, KS - WICHITA CITY COUNCIL TO RE-EVALUATE '07 DOG LAW - Wichita's animal control officials say they're still struggling with aggressive and stray pit bulls despite a "dangerous dogs" law approved in 2007. A year's worth of experience with the law has led officials to return to the City Council next Tuesday with options that include a pit bull ban, new breed-specific restrictions or the status quo. ...The pit bull proposals come despite a modest decrease in the number of bites and strays logged by animal control officers. The council will be discussing this issue on Tuesday, January 27, 2009. No vote will be taken at that time which allows us the opportunity to send POLITE AND RESPECTFUL opposition to breed specific legislation to the Wichita officials for their consideration prior to any vote being taken on this issue. Proposed revisions can be seen here. |
TEXAS - New Legislation Could Target Specific Dog Breeds - Call it selective enforcement against dangerous dogs. Texas already has stringent laws against vicious canines in general augmented by ordinances in most communities. FOX 34's Jaime Gerik reports the push is on to rifle shot the approach specifically legislate against particular breeds. The article is in video format. |
Pilot Grove, MO - Pilot Grove one step closer to vicious dog ban - Pilot Grove is now one of many towns attempting to pass an ordinance banning certain breeds of vicious dogs within city limits. At the December meeting, the city council had instructed Mayor Dennis Knipp to have city counselor Mike Conway draft an ordinance banning five different breeds of potentially dangerous dogs. In recent months, other cities - both nation-wide and locally - have explored ordinances to ban pit bulls. The Pilot Grove Council wanted a wider ban so that there would not be discrimination against any breed in particular. There are currently eight breeds of dogs that the American Kennel Association has deemed vicious. The new ordinance would ban five of those. They include: Pit bull; Chinesischer Kampfhund (Chinese fighting dog), otherwise known as a Shar Pei; Chow; Doberman; and Rottweiler. The ban, if approved, would prohibit new vicious dogs from being allowed in the city after the passing of the ordinance. |
**BSL Passed** - Fayette, MO - Council bans pit bulls - The Fayette, Missouri city council unanimously passed an ordinance banning "pit bulls" at the city council meeting on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. The ordinance has a grandfather clause, and those who already own pit bulls will be allowed to keep their dogs as long as they are registered with the city and "properly controlled." Despite the fact that the ordinance - which is now in effect - was vigorously opposed by several residents, as well as County Treasurer Susan Keaton, the ordinance passed on a unanimous vote. |
LAST CHANCE - Fayette, MO - The Fayette, Missouri city council will be voting on their proposed pit bull ban on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. Please take this opportunity to send a final round of POLITE AND RESPECTFUL letters opposing breed specific legislation, as well as educational materials, to the Fayette city officials. Correspondence can be sent via the city clerk clerk@socket.net with a request to please distribute to the mayor and council members for their consideration. |
ALERT - Fayette, MO - Proposed BSL to be voted on Jan. 6, 7 PM - Whether or not to ban pit bulls within the Fayette city limits will be a question council members will address at their next meeting Tuesday [1/6/09 at 7 PM]. Although the pit bull ban is only one part of the proposed animal control ordinance, it has generated the most controversy. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to Joe Bex, Mayor at 660-248-5257 or Robin Overstreet, City Clerk at 660-248-5246, clerk@socket.net |
Denver Pit Bull Ban Under Fresh Attack - Denver's 20-year-old pit bull ban is coming under attack by a group buying billboards asking "Which Dog will Denver Kill Next." News Video
Pit bull policy assailed - Group launches Web site, buys billboards saying 'Denver kills dogs' - Denver kills dogs. That's the message being spread by ROVERlution, a California-based group working to overturn breed-specific legislation in cities like Denver. The Mile High City in May 2005 placed a ban on pit bulls, which has resulted in a backlash from dog lovers across the globe and hundreds of dead dogs. A new Web site, DenverKillsDogs.com, and companion billboards across the city aim at informing the public that Denver is currently killing family dogs, according to backers of the campaign. The Web site features an image of a fireplace with photos of pit bulls and their families plastered across the mantel. "Denver wants family dogs executed or exiled," states the Web site. The billboards ask, "Which dog will Denver kill next?" and feature a baby rolling on the floor with an adorable looking pit bull. The idea is to motivate people to continue hammering city officials to repeal the breed ban. The posters can be found at the Pepsi Center, the Convention Center and at Coors Field. In fact, Denver had killed 1,918 pit bulls as of October since the breed ban was reenacted. David Edelstein, founder of ROVERlution, said as many as 3,100 pit bulls may have been killed when taking into account private shelters that are contracted by the city when city shelters are full. |
Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. |
Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. |
Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. |

Darling Dixie Doll |
Meet precious Dixie! This fun-loving gal is friendly, sweet, outgoing and as you can see from her photos ... a real ham! She turned out to be an outgoing and very fun-loving girl who loves people with all her little heart.
Dixie is very outgoing with lots of happy energy. She is a people pleaser! Dixie Cup doesn't seem to be carrying a past full of baggage with her as she seems to trust and crave the COMPLETE attention of the humans around her. She loves to be held upright in your arms, just the way you would hold a human child. She's tiny and light enough so it is actually quite easy to do! She is quite the cuddle bug and soaks up all the love she can get.
Dixie is fostered in a home with big family, 4 dogs and 4 kids. Great socialization! Dixie is good with male dogs after proper introduction. Dixie has also been exposed to horses and cats and does well around them.
Dixie is crate trained. She is learning to walk well on leash, basic commands and would love a human companion to devote their time to teach her the tricks of the trade. She has learned to respect the "no jumping" rule, and instead jumps and balances on her hind legs in the air.
Dixie promises to return your love a thousand fold if you'll just give her a chance. Please open your heart and home to Dixie ... she's waiting just for you! |

| FEATURED VOLUNTEER January 2009 |
Betty (Gig) Howard |
|
This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of Betty (Gig) Howard, a much appreciated member of our group.
For about a year before she became an official MPR volunteer, Gig began her rescue journey "quietly" and "behind the scenes." She was always there donating much needed supplies and giving donations for dogs that were in need. Finally, much to the delight of MPR, Gig, along with the loving support of her husband, Wayne, became an official MPR volunteer.
They are both such big-hearted people and always willing to lend a hand where ever they can. Gig does an excellent job of providing ideas for fundraisers and keeping us focused on raising funds to help the dogs in need. She was such a tremendous help with the successful fundraising poker tournament last year. Fun was had by all! Some of her other activities include baking dog cookies for our events, providing props and decorations to spruce up our event booths ... the list is well ... endless! |
Gig ... your caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and the dogs. We are so very fortunate and thankful to have you on board. Thank you!
