*** URGENT DOGS ***

Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most of them will be euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.

Those dogs are not part of MPR's program. For the sake of our current dogs, MPR can't bail any of them out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.

MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.

By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!

Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization.

FOSTER HOMES NEEDED  July 2009

Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month

Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.

We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand

I Need A Foster Home Please
I Need A Foster Home Please
I Need A Foster Home Please I Need A Foster Home Please

As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.

Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of these sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home

MPR BLOG July 2009
  What happened to America's Dog??

You may have heard the American Pit Bull Terrier referred to as the ideal family pet, the "nanny dog", statistically the #1 most popular choice of dog for families with small children....but that was 40 years ago.  What has happened in such a short span of time to turn the all-American family pet into public enemy number one? Has the breed changed?

Coming soon

Most often, the answer is no.  The biggest factor in the downfall of the reputation of "America's dog" is in fact the person on the other end of the leash.

Although I'll be the first person to admit that I'm not exactly sure of everything that has lead up to the sad state that things are in today, it does seem to me that everything goes in a cycle.  This cycle being one of cruelty, greed, ignorance and fear.

Cruelty and greed in the fact that back-alley and "professional" dog fighting rings are on the rise and is already a billion dollar international industry.  Pit bulls all over the United States, and even in other countries where dog fighting is legal, are being tortured and abused in the name of a "sport" that is financially profitable for their abusers, who claim to love the breed.

Once these dogs lose a fight, or become of no further monetary worth to their "owners", they are shot, set on fire, electrocuted, or in the very best case scenario put to sleep.  The news media catches wind of these events and even of some dog attacks.

This is where ignorance and fear come in.  All of a sudden, there is a pit bull attack on every street corner and the townspeople are living in fear of these "monsters" who live in the backyards next to them.  No one stops to notice that half of the "pit bulls" featured in news stories don't even resemble a pit bull but just got labeled as such simply because they bit someone.  Or the fact that dogs of all breeds and sizes bite people every day but that doesn't seem to garner much news coverage or merit any real attention.  Or even the fact that when it is a pit bull in question, it is usually an abused or neglected dog that was involved in an incident.

Then the breed bans started in and in many cases all this solved was responsible owners losing their beloved pets and criminals and thugs ignoring the laws and continuing to keep unstable and uncared for animals.

From as much as I can gather, this is the chain of events that has led up to where we currently stand.  All of these events the evils of man, none the fault of this loyal and loving breed.  So please remember the next time you see the latest news story about a chained up pit bull attacking someone, that is NOT the real Pit Bull.

The real American Pit Bull terriers of the world are at home snuggled up on the couch with a child, sitting at their owners feet or even busy working as certified therapy dogs.  Sadly a lot of them are even sitting in countless shelters waiting for their turn to die; their punishment for doing nothing more than existing and wanting to be loved. And that need for love and beautiful personality will always be what makes pit bulls, at least my eyes, America's dog.

Dog Fighting Horror - (not for the faint of heart)
OFF THE CHAIN is an unprecedented look into the underground world of dog fighting.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - As many as 350 dogs were seized and about 30 people arrested during raids in five states Wednesday that animal welfare groups are calling the largest simultaneous raid of dogfighting operations in the U.S.

U.S. attorneys in four of the states announced related indictments accusing 26 people of cruelties ranging from denying animals medical treatment to shooting dogs in the head when they didn't fight well, then throwing their carcasses into a river or burning them in a barrel.

Task forces of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies conducted the raids and made arrests in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma following a more than year-long investigation prompted by information gathered by the Humane Society of Missouri. It wasn't clear whether or to what extent the operations were related.

Kathy Warnick, president of the Humane Society of Missouri, said tips had come in from "multiple sources" about dogfighting, and anticruelty workers worked with federal authorities for 18 months. "This heinous, heinous bloodsport is not going to be tolerated," she said. More ...

Four frightened pit bulls found refuge in FDNY trucks after blaze breaks out in their apartment - Four frightened pit bulls found refuge in a fire truck early Saturday after a blaze broke out in their Chinatown apartment, officials said. The well-behaved animals felt so at home inside the truck it took first responders to the fire at 147 Elizabeth St. 30 minutes to coax them out. One dog sat in the driver's seat and others hung out in the storage compartments on the side of the truck.
Whitehall, OH - Whitehall councilwoman deflects residents' calls for resignation - Whitehall City Councilwoman Jackie Thompson and a group of residents apparently have drawn lines in the sand after a majority of council members, for a second time, rejected Thompson's effort to ban pit bulls and other vicious dogs from the city. Following the defeat of her ordinance at the Tuesday, July 21, meeting of City Council, numerous residents called on Thompson to resign.

New Research Exposes High Taxpayer Cost to Ban Pit Bulls - All bark, no bite, costs in the millions: Breed-discriminatory legislation that targets pit bull-type dogs is an expensive waste of tax dollars, according to an economic study commissioned by Best Friends Animal Society. The study, serves as core information for a new online "Fiscal Impact Calculator" that Best Friends says will help state and local governmental entities calculate the true cost of implementing and enforcing breed-discriminatory laws.

BSL NEWS

DeSoto, KS - City Council’s approval of new code book bans more pit bulls - The De Soto City Council approved a codification and updating of city codes, which changed little except to make it illegal to have a new pit bull in De Soto as of April 1, 2009. Pit bulls owned by residents of the city owned before April 1 were exempt from the ban. Those dogs were covered by a previous statute requiring them to be inside, penned or on a leash at all times.
Midwest City, OK - MWC & Residents Fight Over Dog Ban - A battle continues in Midwest City over which dogs can be owned by residents. Bull terrier is one of the breeds that are not allowed. But a local family won a ruling to keep their dogs and now, the city is waiting for their appeal to be heard in court. NOTE: Oklahoma Statute indicates that no city within Oklahoma can practice specific breed banning.
Tonganoxie, KS - Dog laws to remain unchanged - During Monday night’s [7/13/2009] Tonganoxie City Council meeting, the council decided against changing its current dog ordinance, which bans certain dog breeds.

SIOUX CITY, IOWA - Rochester's dog declared vicious - The police captain in charge of reviewing vicious dog cases has upheld Sioux City Animal Control's declaration that a dog owned by city Councilman Aaron Rochester is vicious. Animal Control made that determination after the Rochester family's Labrador retriever bit a neighbor who was walking on the sidewalk Saturday afternoon in front of the Rochester house in the 1300 block of 46th street.

***NOTE*** - For those that may not be aware, the shoe is on the other foot for Sioux City, Iowa, city councilman, Aaron Rochester who spearheaded a campaign to ban pit bulls in the city.

**ALERT** HAYS, KS- Commissioners discuss stricter pet ordinances - It remains uncertain whether a ban on pit bulls and other dog breeds will be the Hays City Commission's solution to a lingering controversy, but commissioners seem to agree stricter regulations are needed. Commissioners discussed the issue of pet ordinances in-depth at Thursday's work session and agreed to continue revamping the city's existing dangerous and vicious dog legislation. Commissioners discussed imposing stricter regulations on dog owners, particularly residents who choose to own a breed of canine that is known to be dangerous and those who do not register their pets. Hickman suggested listing certain breeds, such as pit bulls, as dangerous dogs under city ordinance. This would mean pet owners would need to take additional precautions to keep their pet in town. Please send your POLITE AND RESPECTFUL opposition to the Hays city officials. Please also send educational materials and viable alternatives for their consideration, as well.
Lincoln, Nebraska - City mulls changes to dog laws - Lincoln officials are mulling changes that would allow them to crack down on the owners of dogs that bite people. Note: Nobody said anything about pit bulls. City officials say they aren't interested in targeting any one breed. They're interested in targeting dog owners. "We can look at breed-specific banning all we want, but the core issue is the irresponsible pet owner," said director Bruce Dart of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department.
WICHITA, KS - Pit bulls and rabies vaccine laws start today - New city animal laws that go into effect today [7/1/2009 ]affect Wichita residents who own pit bulls, other dogs, cats, ferrets and large animals such as horses. Pit bull owners will have to get their dogs microchipped and spayed or neutered within six months - unless they have a breeder's license.
TROY, MO - BSL PASSED - Troy board bans pit bulls, owners have 60 days to register current dogs - In an unanimous vote Monday evening [6/22/2009], the Troy Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance prohibiting the ownership of pit bulls within the City of Troy. In the ordinance, the board of aldermen 'finds that pit bull dogs are dangerous and potentially hazardous to the community because the breed possesses characteristics of aggression, strength, gameness, viciousness, predaceousness, unpredictability and savageness not possessed by other breeds of dog.'
speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

CENTERFOLD   July 2009
 Terrific Tiana

Poor little Tiana was starving and freezing outside last winter, bound to a chain with no way to escape her tragic situation. Can you imagine trying to endure temperatures below zero when you have a short coat like that and no fat on your body? Tiana survived 2 or 3 winters like that as well as scorcing hot summer days.

Since being rescued, Tiana is so happy all the time now that she just will not stop smiling. Tiana just can't contain her love for people and her joy to be with everyone. Typical bully girl!

We think she would be awesome in a home with kids because she is so tolerant, is such a clown and has wonderful playful nature. She'd be a great family companion. Tiana is medium size but quite stocky. She's over 60 lbs but she is not a large dog. Just a "big boned" kinda girl. Tiana is an all around very easy and well behaved companion. She crates very well, doesn't try to jump the fence, is responsive and eager to please, and even though she lived on a chain before, she is housebroken and acts like a little lady in the house.

If you are looking for a happy dog who is always smiling and always in a good mood, Tiana is your gal! She would make a great match for anyone who wants a best friend! Won't you give her a chance?

FEATURED VOLUNTEER July 2009
  Mike Kitchens

We're very pleased this month to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Mike Kitchens. Mike plans and attends adoption events, provides homechecks, application screening, and helps take care of the dogs in boarding when he's able to.

He tells us his love of pit bulls came from some friends who had to stay with him for a while. At the time, he was real reluctant to let a pit in his house at first. But he instantly fell in love with him and he honestly became Mike's dog instead of theirs. When they moved there was kind of a void that had to be filled with another pit bull.

Mike got started with MPR over a sticker on a car, believe it or not. :-) He had seen the car in his area and had been wanting to meet some other pit bull lovers around him. After talking with the person he was asked to join MPR as a volunteer.

Mike says he has always wanted to work with dogs. He loves knowing that he's doing some good by helping to place needy pit bulls with families who have their own void to fill. He feels that Pit Bulls are by far a superior breed above all others and he's a committed pit bull owner for life. As Mike said, "You haven't felt love until you have felt the love of a pit bull! :-) "

Mike's hard work and commitment is such an asset to MPR and we are so very thankful to have him on board. Thank you Mike!

He loves the couch and sleeping with blankets and pillows! He's such a baby!
