Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

*** URGENT DOGS *** |
|
Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.
Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to screen all applications for Pit Bull type dogs.
When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.
MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.
By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!
Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization. |

| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED October 2009 |
|
|
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month |
Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.
We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand |
|
As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.
Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home |

The "Tricks" to Teach Your Dog His Halloween Costume is a "Treat"! |
For some dogs, wearing a Halloween costume can be a bit scary! The costume may feel strange or make noises as the dog moves and people tend to treat their pets differently when they are wearing clothes.
With a few helpful hints, wearing a costume can be a fun and positive experience! |
|
-
Don't rush home and put the costume on as soon as you buy it. Begin a slow introduction with treats a couple of weeks prior to wearing the costume.
-
During the training period, the dog only receives treats and praise when he is in costume so he associates the costume with good things.
-
Begin by laying the costume gently across the dog's back and give him treats and verbal praise.
-
Do this several times a day, for several days, for a few minutes until he is comfortable. This process may take longer with headwear or footwear.
|
-
Once he is comfortable, fasten the costume and gradually increase the amount of time he wears the costume, continue treats and verbal praise.
-
When he is used to wearing the costume, encourage him to begin moving about, giving treats and praise as he walks.
-
After a few more days, put his leash on and take a walk, continue to use treats and verbal praise.
-
Finally, engage the help of a friend. Have the friend give the dog treats and praise in his costume.
-
Your dog should now be happy when he sees his Halloween costume, as his experience has been a positive one!

How about a $3,500 tax deduction for pet care? - Are you interested in a tax deduction of up to $3,500 for pet care? We're just catching up with the proposed bill, called the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act, but thought you'd like to know.
A Michigan Republican, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, has introduced a bill that would allow the deduction of up to $3,500 on federal taxes for "qualified pets."
It defines "qualified pet" as "legally owned, domesticated, and live animals" and says qualified care would include vet care.
The bill justifies the proposed deduction by noting that the human-animal bond "has been shown to have positive effects upon people's emotions and physical well-being."
Click here to read the full bill.
Write off dog food and the vet? - Should you be allowed to deduct ownership of cats, dogs, birds, lizards and more from your taxes? You could under a proposed new federal bill, which allows up to a $3,500 tax deduction every year for things like pet food and vet bills. |

Adopt-A-Dog Month---- (AHA) -
Millions of dogs across the country face euthanasia every year because there are not enough people who will adopt them and give them caring homes. To give these dogs another chance at finding happiness, every October American Humane celebrates Adopt-A-Dog Month. Join us in promoting this annual tradition by adopting a dog from your local shelter or breed-rescue group or learning more about responsible dog care.
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month---- (ASPCA) - According to the ASPCA, eight to 12 million animals enter shelters each year nationwide, and more than half of those animals are euthanized. ASPCA places special emphasis in October to urge potential pet parents to consider choosing from the millions of adoptable canines in shelters and rescue groups across the country. |

NATIONAL ANIMAL SAFETY AND PROTECTION MONTH
(Emergency Animal Rescue Service - United Animal Nations) - Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) provides lifesaving care and sheltering for animal victims of natural and human-caused disasters. Volunteers come from across the United States and Canada and from all walks of life, but they have one thing in common: a commitment to helping animals in need. |
|
Donated food helps pets and owners - In these days of economic woe, shelters and animal groups are meeting lots of pet owners who love their cats and dogs but are struggling to feed them. Several Northland animal rescue groups started the Northland Pet Pantry last spring to give pet food to those hurting financially and worried they may have to give up their animals. They're seeing more requests for help with pet food than ever before. Spay & Neuter gave out 14,000 pounds of pet food in the past 12 months. Since the organization opened a pet food pantry last year, the need has kept climbing. The Spay & Neuter pantry isn't meant to be the food source for pet owners. It's there to help those in a financial jam keep their animals. |

The city of Lincoln appears to be moving toward enactment of new laws that are tougher on dangerous dogs and their owners.
|
NEW UPDATE - SENATH, MO - Bootheel town considering banning pit bulls - Several residents of Senath attended the Senath City Council meeting in support of keeping their family pets, which would be taken from the homes as stated in a recently proposed ordinance banning pit bulls from the city. The council decided to postpone the passing of a new ordinance and attempt to fix the problem by more strictly enforcing the current dangerous dog ordinance. |
SENATH, MO - Pit bull battle over possible ban brews in Senath - Another Heartland town tackles the controversial issue of banning certain breeds of dogs. A pit bull battle is brewing in Senath. But Bird argues her dog isn't dangerous.
"She not aggressive," Bird said. "I have never had the law called on me on her since I've had her."
In fact, she started a petition and had nearly 90 signatures. The Senath City Council will vote on the ordinance October 12th. If passed, dog owners with "dangerous dogs" will be given 30 days to get rid of them or could face a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail.. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to the Senath City Mayor, Joe Lane, at 301 W Commercial St, Senath, MO 63876-9234, 573) 738-2833. Please let us know if anyone has contact information for the Senath City Attorney, Johnny Dalton, so we can post it here. |
speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does. |

Spooktacular Spartacus |
Absolutely Spectacular! Spartacus is one of the best looking and most impressive dogs we ever had in the program. Yet, when it comes to his personality, he is nothing but a big happy baby with a total goofball nature.
To say that Spartacus is beautiful is an understatement. His pictures so don't do him justice. Not only are we not able to capture his great beauty but the amazing color of his coat has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The dog is a heck of a head-turner.
He looks impressive and intimidating with his huge head, cropped ears and muscular body but don't let his appearance fool you. The dog is a total goofball! He is so friendly and so fun-loving that you can't help but smile and laugh every time he's around. He is suuuuuch a clown!
Spart is veeeeery puppy-like and will need a home with a large fenced yard where he can run outside and zoom around as much as he needs to burn off his energy. We could see him share his home with a friendly and outgoing female, if well supervised. |
|
Spart is ready to love and find a forever family that loves him in return. Are you that spooktacular person who will open your heart and home for Spart? Just look at that gorgeous love ... how can you say no? |
| FEATURED VOLUNTEER October 2009 |

Laura Tumak Hickey |
|
This month MPR would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer Laura. Laura joined MPR in January of 2009 and is mom to a beautiful 3 year-old brindle beauty, 4 cats and a very cute son as well as a baby on the way.
How she finds enough time to volunteer for MPR is beyond us but we're sure glad she's chosen to spend what extra time she has to helping homeless dogs through MPR.
Laura does a fantastic job of screening and checking references on adoption applications. She also helps to keep us informed about BSL issues. And if that's not enough she even helps with pulling fundraisers together.
|
Laura's hard work and commitment is such an asset to MPR and we are so very thankful to have her on board. Thank you!

Neptune whose new name is Daddy has been doing great. I think that he is still adjusting to the new environment but for such a short time has come a long way. He loves taking rides in the car which is now a daily activity. He has even started to put his head out the window.
He did great at Petco getting his nails clipped although he did not like being very far away. The people there allowed me to stay with him while they clipped and he had no problem. We go for three short walks a day and he seems to enjoy them very much. Yesterday was car wash day and he loved all the people and got so many compliments it was impressive. He sat between my legs while they washed and dried and allowed everyone to pet him without incident. His training is coming along well, he does sit and stay with no problem although trying to keep him from hogging the bed at night is going to be a challenge.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the help with the adoption and Daddy has definitely found his permanent home. He is a perfect fit for me as I am for him. I will send some pictures as soon he stops being so camera shy.
