Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

*** URGENT DOGS *** |

Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.
Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to screen all applications for Pit Bull type dogs.
When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.
MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.
By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!
Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization. |

| MPR ADOPTION EVENTS September 2009 |
|
|
MPR holds Adoption Events on a regular basis to allow the public to meet our dogs, talk to our volunteers about Pit Bull ownership, ask question and spend individual time with a dog they might be interested to adopt. |
Please email us if you want to know which dog will be attending this event.
Some events may be cancelled in case of rain. |
| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED September 2009 |
|
|
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month |
Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we cant do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.
We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand |
|
As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.
Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home |

The Dog Days of Summer are over, and in schools everywhere the pitter patter of new school shoes echo throughout the halls. Backpacks, lunchboxes, and school supplies fly off the shelves as parents prepare their children for the upcoming year ahead. As you send your child off to school this year, please don't let your four legged friend be left behind. Students come in all shapes and sizes, and this year we at Missouri Pit Bull Rescue challenge American Pit Bull Terrier owners to stand up to the front of the class and become not only a Pit Bull Owner but a Pit Bull Teacher. This may sound intimidating at first, and that is why we have provided a Student Pawbook to guide you as you and your canine companion learn what it means to have a true student/teacher relationship that will be rewarding, fufilling, and most importantly lots of fun.
No Free Lunch Program
The menu this year consists of loads of affection, tummy rubs, yummy treats, and a side of couch cuddling. The price for such a delicious fare is not cheap, but definitely affordable.
|
The payment for this type of attention can come in many forms. Acceptable forms of payment include sitting, laying down, stay, a paw shake, or just a submissive state of mind. By requiring your Pit Bull to work for these pleasures he or she will begin to see you as their dominant pack leader. If the payment is ignored or not required the balance will increase, your debt will grow, and soon your furry friend will no longer respect your authority. It will not be long before your dog is trying to rule the roost.
Academics
Mentally stimulating your dog is as important as a child learning to read. Training your dog for 15-20 minutes a day is extremely beneficial to you as well as your dog. The trust, respect, and bond that you and your dog share makes your training more meaningful to your dog. Training your dog regularly will increase this bond and level of respect. Also, mental exercises have also been proven to be just as exhausting for dogs as physcial exercise. Your student will be more confident, and most important he or she will be very tired. A tired dog is a well behaved dog. In addition to these benefits, dogs gain confidence by being challenged and succeeding. A confident dog is less nervous, less anxious, and less aggressive which makes for a happy dog and a very happy owner. It is very important to start small, praise the behavior that is desired, and then move on to a more difficult request. Start at a level where the dog will succeed, and continue to set them up for success. If your dog is more likely to hold a sit inside than outside, work on the sit inside until your dog has mastered the command. Then move to a busier area with more distractions.
Physical Fitness
It is recommended that dogs get 30 minutes of exercise 2-3 times daily. This regular release of energy will keep your dog calm and submissive. Most problems that occur in a home between the owner and his or her dog are a result of a lack of exercise. This is also when dogs are most likely to use the bathroom. By staying on a regular exercise schedule your dog will have plenty of opportunity to use the bathroom outside which leaves less chance of him or her going inside the house. Sticking to a regular schedule helps your dog understand this concept even more as they will get use to bathroom and walking breaks the same time every day.
Foreign Language
Dogs communicate in a language unlike our own. When speaking to your Pit Bull it is not as important what you say but how you say it. When dogs communicate they use body language and growls. Using a calm and assertive tone expresses dominance and demands respect.
Acceptable and Effective Disciplinary Methods
Corporal punishment can pyschologically harm a dog and has been shown to be less than effective when correcting negative behavior. Positive reinforcement such as small treats, or negative reinforcement such as a quick squirt with a water bottle have a much greater impact and do not cause the relationship between teacher and student to be harmed.
These are a few items from our Student Pawbook that can change the relationship you currently have with your Pit Bull. It is important to be clear, consise, and consistent when using any of these techniques. One of the many great characteristics of bully breeds is their intelligence and loyalty. If you are committed to teaching we promise they will be committed to learning. Have a great 2009-2010 school year!

National Adopt a Black Dog Month - Many black dogs languish in shelters or remain with rescue organizations long after other dogs get adopted. Despite this, black dogs make terrific companions. They're gorgeous, wonderful animals. Open your heart and home and adopt a black dog this month.
September 13 - National Pet Memorial Day - Words cannot describe the sense of loss we feel when our faithful friend dies. It is often one of life's most heart-wrenching experiences. Recognizing the importance of remembering our cherished pets, the second Sunday of September is the official National Pet Memorial Day. This is a day set aside to remember our departed companions and special members of our family.
September 14 - National Dog Week begins - Go out of your way to show some extra attention and affection to that favorite dog in your life. If you don’t have a dog, consider adopting one. If that isn’t feasible, consider fostering for a rescue. Everyone should experience the love of a dog, and vice-versa. |

| SALINA, KS - DNA testing in Salina saves pet - Salina animal control officers knew the dog they saw looked like a pit bull. It didn't matter that the dog in question, Angie Cartwright's family pet, Lucey, had never bitten anyone, or had never acted out aggressively. When Cartwright's brother's dog, which she was pet sitting, got loose from her yard someone called animal control. The officers picked up the dog and collared Lucey in the process. The officers explained that they were taking Lucey to a veterinarian for a breed check - a professional opinion to determine Lucey's breed. Since 2005, Salina has had a ban on owning unregistered pit bulls and mixed breeds that are predominantly pit bull. Today, Lucey is back home, and Cartwright credits a genetic test kit that helps pet owners identify the heritage of their mixed-breed dogs. The test found a minor amount of Lucey's DNA came from Staffordshire Bull Terrier genes - a little more than 12 percent, not close to a predominant percentage. |
| Study: Chihuahuas bite vets most; Lhaso Apsos inflict worst injuries - Chihuahuas are most likely to bite veterinarians, Lhaso Apsos deliver one of the most severe bites, and about 40 percent of all dog bites are delivered by mixed breeds. These and other dog-bite truths are unveiled in a new study two years in the making that analyzes what kind of dogs bite and why. The Coalition for Living Safely with Dogs and the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association released their study in May during National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and the results shed light on how likely a dog is to bite, a factor that may be pertinent to breed-specific legislation in some states and cities. The study concludes that all dogs will bite, and that circumstances under which the bite occurred are more indicative than the breed. The full study can be viewed online at http://www.livingsafelywithdogs.org/. |

One of 51 pit bulls seized from the Michael Vick dog fighting ring bust in April 2007, Sweet Jasmine was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The accompanying article detailed the lives of the pit bulls that were placed in foster care and adoptive homes.
While we only knew this sweet angel from the pages of a magazine, we are deeply saddened to hear of Jasmine's passing. Jasmine touched so many lives in so many ways. We thank those who showed this girl kindness and love and gave her a second chance in life. Thank you, sweet Jasmine, for showing us courage, love, how to relive life and how to forgive. |

| New Research Exposes High Taxpayer Cost to Ban Pit Bulls - All bark, no bite, costs in the millions: Breed-discriminatory legislation that targets pit bull-type dogs is an expensive waste of tax dollars, according to an economic study commissioned by Best Friends Animal Society. The study, serves as core information for a new online "Fiscal Impact Calculator" that Best Friends says will help state and local governmental entities calculate the true cost of implementing and enforcing breed-discriminatory laws. |

SENATH, MO - Pit bull battle over possible ban brews in Senath - Another Heartland town tackles the controversial issue of banning certain breeds of dogs. A pit bull battle is brewing in Senath. But Bird argues her dog isn't dangerous.
"She not aggressive," Bird said. "I have never had the law called on me on her since I've had her."
In fact, she started a petition and had nearly 90 signatures. The Senath City Council will vote on the ordinance October 12th. If passed, dog owners with "dangerous dogs" will be given 30 days to get rid of them or could face a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail.. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to the Senath City Mayor, Joe Lane, at 301 W Commercial St, Senath, MO 63876-9234, 573) 738-2833. SENATH, MO - Council votes to pass ordinance making pit-bull dogs illegal in city limits - The Senath City Council will have the option to pass an ordinance at the October meeting that will make owning and temporary keeping of pit-bull dogs illegal in the city. When passed, they will give pit bull owning residents until November 1 to remove the dogs. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to the Senath City Mayor, Joe Lane, at 301 W Commercial St, Senath, MO 63876-9234, 573) 738-2833. Please let us know if anyone has contact information for the Senath City Attorney, Johnny Dalton, so we can post it here. |
SALEM, AR - Council discusses vicious dog ordinance - Salem City Council met on Sept. 3 to discuss a new city ordinance banning vicious dogs. The mayor presented the council members with examples of several vicious dog ordinances from surrounding areas, and also passed out a copy of a lawsuit that had been filed to challenge a vicious dog ordinance in Missouri. The council agreed that pit bulls, mixed pit bull breeds and Rottweiler's would be included in the new ordinance. City attorney, Duane Plumlee was attending the meeting, and expressed the point that existing dogs would need to be grandfathered into any ordinance the city enacts; however, he stated that certain restrictions could be put into place making it very difficult for current owners to be compliant, such as posting signs, neutering the animals, having their vaccinations up to date and more. The council moved to have Plumlee create a draft ordinance for review at the regularly scheduled city council meeting on Sept. 24. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to the City of Salem, P.O. Box 619, Salem, AR 72576; Phone: (870) 895-3478; Fax: (870) 895-4540. Per the city, they do not have e-mail addresses. The fastest method of contact will be fax. |
HUTCHINSON, KS - Hutch won't ban pit bulls - City leaders in Hutchinson won't bother passing a proposed pit bull ban, saying their vicious dogs laws already have enough bite. After Wichita toughened up its laws regarding pit bulls inside city limits, the Hutchinson City Council took a look Tuesday morning at the proposed pit bull ban. But once council members studied the facts, they say they won't pass any laws that target a specific dog breed. The council decided it would be unfair to target pit bulls. For example, out of the 229 bites on record in Hutchinson since 2005, 32 were committed by Labradors. That's nearly 15 percent. |
New Florence, MO - Ordinance Targets Pit Bulls - The Mayor signed an ordinance Tuesday changing the rules for pit bull owners. People in New Florence can no longer adopt pit bulls. The ordinance bans residents from bringing in new pit bulls, and sets guidelines for current pit bull owners. Some of these include registering the dog, using a metal leash and muzzle when walking it and installing a locked cage with a cement floor. Also, owners must obtain liability insurance with a minimum amount of $100,000. |
| speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does. |

This month MPR would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteers, Melanie and Dustin.
Melanie and Dustin got their start volunteering for MPR in October of '08. They started out as a foster home and continue to enjoy fostering as well as helping with events, transports, taking pictures, and helping to keep the website updated!
"We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we adopted our fist Pittie, but we will probably never own another breed! And it is so rewarding to be able to foster them. It's one of the most bittersweet experiences you will ever have, but in the end totally worth it. We hope to be able to foster for as long as there is a need!"
Melanie and Dustin's hard work and commitment is such an asset to MPR and we are so very thankful to have them on board. Thank you!

8/17/2009 UPDATE: Attached are some photos of Lola and her new buddy Tater (our other Pit) and of Me and Crystal.
They're getting along great:)
Crystal and I live in Ozark, MO; Tater is 4 yrs. old and in addition to having a backyard to run around in, they go for walks, get lots of treats and play together wonderfully. She usually sleeps at night on the couch pictured even though there's a fleece blanket for her to curl up on. Crystal is a painter and does woodworking, so Lola always has lots of attention.
