Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bull Dogs
SPAY & NEUTER
SNKC CAN HELP! |
Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

*** URGENT DOGS *** |
|
Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.
Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to screen all applications for Pit Bull type dogs.
When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.
MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.
By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!
Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization. |

"I am an Animal Rescuer" |
|
|
My job is to assist God's creatures
I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count
I have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends
I don't often use the word "pet"
I notice those lost at the road side
And my heart aches
I know of no creature unworthy of my time
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven
But I believe there are
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind
Some may think we are master of the animals
But the animals have mastered themselves
Something people still haven't learned
War and Abuse make me hurt for the world
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for mankind
We are a quiet but determined army
And we are making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan
nothing more rewarding than saving a life
No higher recognition than watching them thrive
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play
who only days ago, was too weak to eat
By the love of those who I've been privileged to rescue
I have been rescued
I know what true unconditional love really is
for I've seen it shining in the eyes of so many
Grateful for so little
I am an Animal Rescuer
My work is never done
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full

| MPR ADOPTION EVENTS January 2010 |
|
|
MPR holds Adoption Events on a regular basis to allow the public to meet our dogs, talk to our volunteers about Pit Bull ownership, ask question and spend individual time with a dog they might be interested to adopt. |
Please email us if you want to know which dog will be attending posted event(s).
Some events may be cancelled in case of rain. |
| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED January 2010 |
|
|
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month |
Boarding is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we can't do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.
We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand |
|
As it is, we can't afford helping anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. In the meantime, our boarding dogs are in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull.
Boarding is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, boarding is often a step up in life. But boarding needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU! Become a Foster Home |

A Special Life - MPR extends our condolences to Gale Frey, Mutts-N-Stuff and the many whose hearts Fay touched. Fay, one of the Missouri 500 dogs, passed away this past Monday following facial reconstructive surgery. The last few months of her life have been by far the happiest for her. She may have only been known to many for a few short months, but she packed a whole lot of loving into such a short time and touched so many hearts. She is missed by many. |
Protect Your Pet from Winter's Woes - As the cold winter chill descends upon us for another year, it's worth remembering that we aren't the only ones who feel the bite of Jack Frost nipping at our noses.
In many areas, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following these simple guidelines provided by HSUS.

| Donated food helps pets and owners - In these days of economic woe, shelters and animal groups are meeting lots of pet owners who love their cats and dogs but are struggling to feed them. Several Northland animal rescue groups started the Northland Pet Pantry last spring to give pet food to those hurting financially and worried they may have to give up their animals. They're seeing more requests for help with pet food than ever before. |

| Dog Training with Victoria Stilwell - Top 10 Basic Dog Training Tips - Excellent training tips written by Victoria Stilwell. Five Rules of Positive Dog Training - Positive reinforcement (i.e., giving the dog a reward in the form of praise, play, food or toys when it behaves in a way that you like) has been shown to be the most effective training method. Positive training equals positive results. |

| ASPCA Kids and Pets Interaction Guide - A wonderful resource for parents to raise their own awareness of children and pet interactions and what's appropriate at each phase of a child's development. The family pet is a best friend for many children - a companion who not only provides unconditional love, but who also teaches them about friendship, responsibility, loyalty, and empathy. |
| How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of. |
| speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does. |

LUCKY LUKE |
Please help Lucky Luke find his way "home". This happy-go-lucky boy would love to brighten your days with his charm and comical personality. He's a riot that's for sure. Despite his situation as a homeless dog, Luke is always in a good mood and loves nothing more than to make new friends. Very outgoing goofball, he loves to play and romp around.
Luke has a very unique coat color and pattern. Mostly white with freckles, he has a couple of light brindle patches. Big bully head, stocky body and very muscular, he's quite the little looker.
Luke is probably a little under a year old and very adaptable. He likes to play with other dogs but like with any bully breed, roughhousing needs to be supervised. We think Luke would love a home with a friendly and playful female.
Luke is currently staying at MPR's shelter, enjoying every minute he spends with the volunteers. He's a total goofball and everyone has fun with him. Luke is somewhat energetic when it's time to play but can be a couch potato when it's time to relax. |
|
| He is very easy-going and nothing bothers him. Quite the little Casanova, he's very popular with the ladies, though he can be a "guys dog" when it's time to play. Will you open your heart and home to him this New Year and make his 2010 the best one ever? Just look at that fantastic boy ... how can you say no? |

Rachel Ewing |
|
This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of Rachel Ewing, a much appreciated member of our group. Rachel began as a foster home for Blockhead (now JayDee) whom she adopted in 2006. Since then, she's provided hospice care for numerous MPR dogs while they recuperated from various illnesses and has always opened her home to MPR dogs when MPR has had urgent situations and the dogs had no where else to go.
Rachel has worked many events; in addition to helping take care of the dogs in boarding, being one of MPR's photographers, helping rescue dogs even in bad weather, and assisting on homechecks, local and long distance! Not only all that, but she has even provided her home as a storage unit for MPR supplies and has hosted a Garage sale for MPR last summer. It doesn't stop there ... she's also our secretary's secretary helping to keep us all organized and on track!
Rachel does an awesome job managing everything and is always willing to help wherever MPR has the greatest need. |
We just don't know what we would do without her. Rachel's dedication to MPR doesn't go unnoticed.
Rachel ... your caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and the dogs. We are so very fortunate and thankful to have you on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you!

UPDATE November 26, 2009 - I am just letting you know everything is going SO great with Ollie!! :) He is the best dog ever!! He gets along great with us, our pup, and our cats! Him and Bacardi came with us to Kevin's families and he loved everyone and everyone loved him. He fits in perfect with our family. He especially loves the back yard! Him and Bacardi sleep in our bed too, it's a little squished, but it's only fair that he gets to sleep with us since Cardi does. haha (spoiled)
Thank you again!! We will keep you updated with pictures and what not!!
He is an awesome dog. I am attaching some pictures already. He sleeps next to my boyfriend every night, it's hilarious how he sleeps. He is a big cuddler. We take him on walks all the time, we both take turns which dog we take so they get used to both of us. We tried playing fetch with him as Cardi likes fetch, but he wants nothing to do with it. He just likes to chase Bacardi when she is running. We got him his matching collar like Bacardis too. I think it fits him well. :) They are both rubbing off on each other, he is teaching Bacardi to go to the door to go to the bathroom, and she is teaching him bad habits such as taking bones from each other and running with them, not good, we're trying to break them of that. haha. He puts up with a lot from her, as she is only 5 months old she still likes to pick a lot. Other than that, things are going great!! Thank you again for a great dog!! We will continue to keep you updated. Thanks!

UPDATE: 12/22/2009 - Chloe (aka Clover) went to the Assisted Living Facility last Friday and was the hit of the party. The old and young got such a kick out of her and she loved every minute of the attention! I think her and I will be doing much more of that! I think Chloe would be honored for this to end up in "Happy Endings" - because I think it's just her new beginning!
Have a very Merry Christmas to all of you at MPR!

Update 12/31/2009: Tucker (formally known as Drizzle) has been such a wonderful young man. Tucker has acquired a new nickname, Snaggletooth. He has the cutest under bite and when he's begging for food (not that we would EVER feed him table scraps), he'll look at us sideways with his upper lip caught on his CROOKED bottom teeth - too cute for words.
We welcomed a new little boy, Gavin, to our family in May. When we brought Gavin home from the hospital, Tucker immediately decided that Gavin was HIS person. Gavin, 7 months now, absolutely LOVES doggy kisses from his buddy Tucker. I have a feeling these two are going to be inseparable as they grow up together!
If Tucker isn't love'n on Gavin, you can find him romping around in the back yard, playing with a tennis ball, being lazy in his very shabby boutique leopard print chair (yes, he took over a chair in our living room), or snuggling with his k9 sister Alexa.
When we adopted Tucker, we had plans to put him in the Pets for Life, Inc. program to become a therapy dog. He still has a lot of puppy to him, but I am hoping in a few years we can get him going in the program. He's a very smart, loving dog...just needs to work on his excitement level when he meets new people. ; )
We absolutely love our handsome Snaggletooth! Hope you enjoy the pics! |
