*** URGENT DOGS *** |

Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.
Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to help screen applications for Pit Bull type dogs.
When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.
MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.
By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!
Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization. |

Are You Setting Your Dog Up For Failure? |
 |
More often than they should, pit bull owners wonder about the dog park issue, finding themselves explaining to others that their dog is not a "killing machine," it is not "one of those pit bulls" and there is no reason that their dog can’t enjoy off leash time with unknown dogs. Some will even insist that "you only add to the misconception toward this breed when you don't allow your friendly pit bull to go to the dog park.” After all, these people argue that it is all about "how we raise them" and providing socialization is the key to no problem dogs. Unfortunately, that’s not true. |
Dog aggression in our own dogs should not be a problem. Good management and knowledge prevent trouble. Responsible and caring pit bull owners have done their homework and know what to expect from the breed. This breed's genetic traits involve dog aggression, to varying degrees. Even the most well socialized pit bull can one day decide that other dogs are not play buddies. It happens most often when the dog reaches maturity between two and three years of age, and it can happen without apparent reason.
Here are some good articles for basic breed information:
http://www.pbrc.net/breedinfo.html
Because of the breed's background, it is unfair to expect dogs to behave the way we want them to when it comes to dog aggression and dog to dog relationships. We set our dogs up for failure when we decide to let them off leash in a public place and allow them to romp with other dogs. Dog parks are a place where people like to chit chat with each other, paying very little attention to what happens around their dogs. Posturing, body language, subtle looks and even vocalization are often misunderstood or overlooked by dog owners. Even when dogs let us know what is about to happen we might not see what is happening until it is too late. Most dog owners have no idea of what body language means, and don’t know how to intervene if things go wrong. They panic, scream, yell, and hit the attacking dog; all of which often just makes things worse. A fight between two dogs can be hard enough to stop; now imagine a fight among 4 or 5 of them. In fights like these, pets and even people can be seriously injured.
Dog parks are also a place where unknown dogs are present. We don't know if they’re fully vaccinated or in good health. They can be sick and our dogs can get ill as well.
We don't know if they are truly friendly dogs or if they may be aggressive. Everybody's dog is friendly, according to their owners. When the "friendly" dog decides to snap at ours, a fight starts.
Who is going to be blamed for that fight? Will it be the pit bull or the cute little fluffy dog? The answer is obvious.
This breed doesn't need any more accidents, we can't afford them. We are in this situation thank to those who failed their own dogs. When a whole breed suffers because of someone's action it is our business as well. No doubt on that.
Vet bills aren't cheap, emotions can be overwhelming, the guilt stays, so why to risk it? It isn't fair that only one breed is targeted when dogs of other breeds have killed or attacked other dogs. Today, a dog behaving like a dog has become a sin. Fair or not that is how the situation is and every pit bull owner needs to understand it.
Those who are still convinced that a pit bull belongs to a dog park would benefit from reading these links. Their dogs and all of us will benefit as well. Please, don't set your dog up for failure.

| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED April 2010 |

Shelter living is a life-saving option for the few lucky dogs we can afford to help that way, but we can't do it unless we receive financial assistance from people like you.
We have several programs available. Every penny counts! Become a Helping Hand |
|
MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

| Pit bull ban: Disabled Vietnam, Gulf War vets sue Denver and Aurora for discriminating against their service dogs - A federal class-action suit involving disabled Coloradans -- two war veterans with psychological disorders -- and their service animals was filed Tuesday against Aurora, the City and County of Denver and its head of Animal Control. The two veterans, and another disabled woman from out of state, say Denver's controversial pit-bull ban doesn't make exceptions for service dogs and their owners and is therefore a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. | Poplar Bluff, MO - Pit bull ordinance in Poplar Bluff to go into effect Thursday [4/1/2010] - Pit bull owners in Poplar Bluff have until Thursday to register their dogs. The new ordinance requires all pit bulls to be micro-chipped and registered with the city. Animal control officers say any pit bulls that are not registered by the end of the day Thursday can be seized. This is the first step the city is taking in phasing out pit bull breeds in Poplar Bluff. From now on, when a pit bull dies, the owner will not be able to replace it with the same breed. |

Moore says he plans to draft an ordinance and present it to the council at some time in the future. No ordinance has been formally proposed or presented at this time. speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does. |

Sweet Lavender! |
Lavender was rescued from a high-kill shelter and transferred to MPR's mini shelter. This girl is very relieved, to say the least.... She is referred to as "The sweetest dog in the world" by MPR volunteers. She has a great smile, too! We just can't stress enough how sweet she is.... she's so calm and veeeeery affectionate. She is just an adorable little princess who craves love and good care. And believe us, she is very easy to love...
She is something special, has so much love to give and will be devoted to her lucky forever family. Wouldn't you like that to be you?
Remember that if you adopt her, you will not only give a lucky dog a great home but you will be saving another lucky pit bull by opening a spot in MPR's program.....
Will you open your heart and home to her? Just look at that charming sweet face ... how can you say no? |

Staci Cobb |
|
This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Staci.
Staci opened her heart as well as her home as a foster mom. She has loving cared for Nestle until he was adopted and is currently a loving foster mom to Booberry. She even makes time to help care for the boarded dogs at MPR's mini-shelter.
If all that wasn't enough, she facilitated adoptions and also attends and helps with as many adoption events as she's able to.
We are so very fortunate and thankful to have her on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you, Staci!

UPDATE February 27, 2010
Harpo is doing great in his forever home! He loves spending time with his sisters. He wrestles with both of them but seems to know not to be to rough with Zoey my little Jack Russel.
He loves going on long walks and following his sister Kimba everywhere. He is a very laid back boy and loves getting belly rubs and laying in the sun.
He is a great fit for our little family and we can't imagine our lives without him!

UPDATE 3/10/2010
Just giving you an update (plus some pics!). These guys have been lucky here lately. Ashley was off sick thursday friday last week and I was sick monday tuesday this week so they have bee getting lots of attention. I had been slowly introducing them this week (on leash). Zeus has excellent manners (Lexi is learning). Lexi had a little dominance trouble at first but we stopped that immediately. No growling, biting or fights just a little nudging and stuff. They did so well yesterday and got progressively better that we wound up with the results the pics show. These guys are great for each other. Zeus is teaching Lexi manners and Lexi is teaching Zeus when to curb the excitement. They are absolutely still separate and under close eye but we have made the first steps towards best friends for life.
Thanks,
Morgan |

March 10, 2010 UPDATE: Just letting you know that Mr. Ali (Ollie) is going great!!! My boyfriend changed the spelling, go figure! haha. Since it has been nice out, he just suns himself outside on the porch, sometimes refusing to come in. Although sometimes I think he misses the snow... he loveddd running in the snow!! Him and Cardi love each other, we say they are boyfriend/girlfriend instead of brother and sister, they sleep together, bathe each other, and eat out of the same food bowl instead of eating out of their own. They are too cute. He is a hyper little feller, if we don't take them on walks after work, they go crazy! We take em to pet smart once a week too, to pick out bones. He has put on 20lbs since we got him! We only feed him twice a day too!
He has been loving life. Hope you enjoy the pictures!!
Thank you,
Shandi |
