MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

Just this past Sunday, the cover to the left showed up in 32 million homes delivered in Parade magazine. Hardly the image of an intimidating dog - in fact could he be more cute? The accompanying article is "Can you teach a bad dog new tricks?" The article covers the journey of the dogs from Mike Vick's Bad Newz Kennels and the success, and the struggles of the dogs as they have gone through rehabilitation.

My Dog Is Cool

The media takes its lumps over reporting about pit bulls - Critics say the press focuses unfairly on one breed and doesn't dig for real reasons dog attacks happen. Animal control officers across the country have told the ASPCA that when they alert the media to a dog attack, news outlets respond that they have no interest in reporting on the incident unless it involved a pit bull. A quantitative study by the National Canine Resource Council of dog-bite reportage in a four-day period proves that anti-pit bull bias in the media is more than just a theory - it's a fact.
The book, "The Pit Bull Placebo: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Aggression," argues that "our perceptions about the nature and behavior of dogs has been influenced and shaped by persons and organizations who often times disseminate information about dog attacks which is tailored to further an agenda unrelated to the improvement of the human/dog bond." The book further argues: "We have come to be in the midst of a social hysteria about pit bulls because we have abandoned centuries-old common sense and reasoning and have been duped by inaccurate reporting from a media that thrives on sensationalism ... There is a disturbing scarcity of accurate information and investigation done on the real causes and reasons for these incidents."

Reminder from the National Canine Research Council - The excellent book The Pit Bull Placebo: The Media, Myths and Politics of Canine Aggression is available for free download at the National Canine Research Council website. Find it here.

Breed Discriminatory Fiscal Impact Calculator - Tool for municipalities in understanding the real cost of enforcing bans and restrictions on dogs because of their looks. The study that led to the calculator pointed out that dogs often identified as pit bulls may be, in fact, another breed entirely, which raises the question on how to properly identify animals that under the law might be banned.

Dog Training and the Myth of Alpha-Male Dominance - Victoria was profiled in a recent TIME Magazine article entitled "Dog Training and the Myth of Alpha-Male Dominance." In the article, Victoria helps highlight the differences between traditional dominance-based methods and her brand of positive reinforcement philosophies.

Dog Training with Victoria Stilwell - Top 10 Basic Dog Training Tips - Excellent training tips written by Victoria Stilwell. Five Rules of Positive Dog Training - Positive reinforcement (i.e., giving the dog a reward in the form of praise, play, food or toys when it behaves in a way that you like) has been shown to be the most effective training method. Positive training equals positive results.

ASPCA Kids and Pets Interaction Guide - A wonderful resource for parents to raise their own awareness of children and pet interactions and what's appropriate at each phase of a child's development. The family pet is a best friend for many children - a companion who not only provides unconditional love, but who also teaches them about friendship, responsibility, loyalty, and empathy.
How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of.

Hurst, Illinois City Hall 111 Bush Avenue Hurst, IL 62949 (618) 987-2513.
**ALERT** Hannibal, MO - Letter carrier asks council to address city's 'dog problem' - The mayor of Hannibal, MO has asked the police chief to review the ordinances of other communities with breed specific ordinances. Please send your POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters of opposition to the Hannibal city officials.
speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

 CENTERFOLD ... August 2010
   Precious Paprika

What a total sweetheart this dog is. Paprika is a very charming dog and it didn't take long for all the volunteers to fall in love with her. We believe she will make a wonderful family companion and should not be very difficult to handle. She is a sweetheart, has great manners and is full of love... and really, look at that face!

Paprika is crate trained and housebroken. She loves to have a good butt run in the yard but just for a few minutes. She is mostly a pretty laid back and easy going girl.

We believe Paprika would do better in a home with no other dogs. She's ok with her canine roommates at the shelter but they all have not been formally introduced. She prefers people and we think her personality is better suited for being an only pet. We don't know how she would do with cats.....

Won't you open your heart and home to lovable Paprika?

 FEATURED VOLUNTEER ... August 2010
  Julie & John Tischer

VoM

This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Julie Tischer and her supportive husband, John.

Julie and John stepped up to foster a sweetheart that MPR pulled into our program in early 2009. We're sure many of you will remember Victory and her story. After fostering her for a bit, Julie and John decided to adopt her and renamed her Charlie. They've also opened their home and fostered Igloo, and Long John Silver.

And that's not all folks ... Julie and John work the shelter duty helping to take care of the dogs in MPR's mini-shelter and have attended several adoption events. They recently organized and hosted the event at the Lees Summit PetCo which was a smashing success!

We are so very fortunate and thankful to have them on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you, Julie and John!

 NEW BEGINNINGS ... JULY 2010

 HAPPY ENDINGS ... August 2010
Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers  going....

UPDATE July 25, 2010

Ariel is wonderful! The chewing issue got alot better. I think for the most part she was just transitioning to the new home. We still have to watch ourselves leaving shoes on the ground...the temptation is too much for her! She is so sweet and her and Dom love each other. They play pretty rough when we go outside but when one goes for a water break the other one patiently waits. They cuddle together all day long! She listens so well and doesn't even bark when someone comes to the door. She is a daddy's girl and Dom is a momma's boy so it's perfect! I'm so happy it worked out...pit bulls are the best dogs on earth!

- Maranda

UPDATE July 2010:

We mostly call him Buddy, but sometimes he is Buster, like when he snores, as in knock it off Buster, and if he is really ignoring me he's Chuck! lol He is so spoiled, he has an upstairs bed and a downstairs bed, and he loves to go for rides in the car, he even tried to get into the trunk one day! You were right about everyone being his friend, well except the people with the Jack Russel Terrier...he's not too fond of him. He hasn't met the Great Dane in the cul-de-sac yet, but he has chased a few bunnies out of the yard. I'd say he's made the backyard (and the house) his home, now if we can only keep a squeeky toy for longer than 15 minutes we'll be good.

Lisa

7/2/2010 UPDATE:

Burger, now named Chico, is doing great! He and Daisy are getting along really well. He loves to eat and run around the backyard. He's so lovable and loves the attention. Our neighbors are really good about having him here. He is such a good dog and is very calm. I'm sending you a few photos from my phone. We took some this morning too which I have included. :) When my computer is fixed, I will send more.~ Ashley

7/2/2010 UPDATE:

I wanted to reiterate what Bob has said about Axis but from a mother's point of view. I have to say when Bob brought him home, I was a little worried because of all the negative attention Pitbulls get. However, I love animals and was willing to give it a try. Axis is the most gentle, loving, yet goofy dog. My kids adore him, especially my 8-year-old. He literally lays on the carpet with him, with his head on Axis' belly and they sleep. He begs to have Axis sleep in his bed with him, and I am sure Axis would love it. As far as the cats, Axis is very indifferent to them. The only time he gets excited around him is when they hiss at him and hit him. He is not mad at them, just curious. We even caught Axis and one of my cats napping together. Axis has been a wonderful addition to our family and I have absolutely no worries about any aggression from him. He even does not get possessive of his food. He is really just a big baby who wants to be around people. I tell everyone I get the chance that Pitbulls are seriously misunderstood and hope more people get that message. It is really a shame that we can't live in certain cities because of his breed, but he is worth it and I don't want to live in a city anyway who is so uneducated :)

Thanks for all your help with Axis.

Jennifer
