Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.

Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to screen all applications for Pit Bull type dogs.

When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.

MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.

By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!

Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization.

 FOSTER HOMES NEEDED  February 2010

MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

 NEWS February 2010

Spay Day USA - Tuesday, February 23, 2010 - An annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. Officially the last Tuesday of February, with events and activities taking place Nationwide throughout the month of February.

Four million cats and dogs - about one every eight seconds - are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100-percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.

For assistance in locating a free or low cost spay/neuter program for pit bulls please see this list. Also, PBRC will assist those needing financial assistance with spaying or neutering their Pit Bull.

February 7th to 14th - Join Dogs Deserve Better as they raise awareness for chained and penned dogs through their Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week campaign. Find out how you can Sponsor a Valentine for a chained dog or penned dog. In 2009 Dogs Deserve Better was able to deliver over 12,000 Valentines to chained or penned dogs!

Show your dogs that they hold a very special place in your heart this Valentine's Day... Make homemade treats, using a heart-shaped cookie cutter ... Buy something special for your dog .... Make special bandanas for them to wear ... Sponsor a rescued dog in honor of your dog ... Share extra Hugs & Kisses! Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!!!

Donated food helps pets and owners - In these days of economic woe, shelters and animal groups are meeting lots of pet owners who love their cats and dogs but are struggling to feed them. Several Northland animal rescue groups started the Northland Pet Pantry last spring to give pet food to those hurting financially and worried they may have to give up their animals. They're seeing more requests for help with pet food than ever before.

 BSL NEWS

speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

 CENTERFOLD February 2010
  NESTLE - Sweet Chocolate Goodness!

Who doesn't like chocolate for Valentine's Day? This adorable little man has an irresistible "chocolate" coat - He looks like a big piece of candy bar!

Nestle is easy-going, smart and well behaved. He is fostered in a home with several dogs, including another MPR dog, Sterling. The two of them get along wonderfully. They love to play.

This adorable boy is loving and affectionate. He likes to cuddle and his foster family claims that he is no trouble at all.

Nestle is crate trained and housebroken. Young enough to adapt to pretty much any situation but old enough to understand training and be responsive. This little chocolate guy really is a great catch. Remember that if you adopt him, you will not only give a lucky dog a great home but you will be saving another lucky pit bull by opening a spot in foster care.....

Will you open your heart and home to him? Just look at that sweet chocolate face ... how can you say no?

Please Adopt Me!

 FEATURED VOLUNTEER February 2010
  Nicole Phillips

This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of Nicole Philipps, a much appreciated member of our group. Nicole puts a lot of effort into organizing MPR's presence at the Homeshow event each year and it is always such a GREAT success.

Nicole does an awesome job managing everything and the event each year couldn't turn out any better. MPR volunteers alway have a lot of fun, the dogs have a lot of fun and MPR has another occasion to help demystify misinformation about Pit Bulls.

Among all her involvement over the years, Nicole, and her boyfriend Chris, had been a foster home for MPR and have rehabilitated, loved and placed many needy Pit Bulls since joining our group in 2006.

Nicole's caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and the dogs. We are so very fortunate and thankful to have her on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you!   ~ MPR Volunteers

 NEW BEGININGS January 2010

 HAPPY ENDINGS
Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers going....

UPDATE December 7, 2009

Gabby (Artemis) is a wonderful dog and has grown close to my wife and I hearts. She is always eager to play and a great learner. She has help in the training of the other two additions to our family, Diamond and Khiko which are pitbulls as well. Can't say anything else but thank you.

UPDATE - January 4, 2010

Lilac is doing great. She started Doggy Daycare at the University Medical Animal Center here in Lincoln in early December. She seems to love it and they call her "the little girl". It gives her time to socialize and completely tires her out. She is weighting almost 40lbs and the vet said she is the ideal body weight and size. She is still a sweet heart but tries to act tuff when playing with her friend "Slick". She isn't much of a barker but when Slick barks, she thinks she needs to also. What can I say, I think she thinks she is a human...she is very spoiled! But we love her to pieces!! Hope all is great with you.

-Michelle

Update - Dec 8, 2009:

Just wanted to let you know that Honey is doing well! You weren't joking about her obsession with toys, she won't put them down! The louder the squeaky toy is the better!

Thanks again for all your help, we are so happy with Honey, she's such a sweetheart, she is soooo attached to Nathan, she follows him wherever he goes:) Krista

UPDATE: January 7, 2010:

Spartacus is doing very well. He has started his private lessons and is making even more progress. He is doing still great with alot of behaviors around the house and he loves his crate. He likes to go lay in there on his own when he rests and at night when he's tired....don't even have to close the door at night lately because he willingly wants to be in there.

He gets a bath about every week in a half. He still won't get in the tub on his own but once he's in there he just stands there. I don't think he's crazy about it, but I think tolerates it and he feels good after he's all cleaned up and has fresh clean bedding in his crate. He loves coming along in the car and is getting better about getting in the car, he will sit and wait for as long as he can, not when I give him the OK, but I'll accept that for now, at least he's not jumping in the car like he was shot out of a cannon. He's stubborn sometimes and for such a tough looking dog he loves, LOVES, baby talk! The tail wags and it has a calming affect on him and when you do it he'll lean into me or put his head on me. A simple no and ignoring him or walking away seems to be effective discipline when he does something not desired. He is doing well on the leash and isn't pulling me. He's working on heel and does it quite well with only a few corrections. Over all he's pretty well behaved.

I have to brag about Spartacus. The day we went to the vet, he had an emergency and our appoinment was going to run late. They said he'd be 30-40 minutes, and I could wait or run an errand. I decided to wait. The weather was bad that day so I didn't want to walk out side. Spartacus did sooooo good! He walked around inside with me sniffing on a fairly loose lead, sat next to me while I sat, watched people come and go with their animals. People came up to pet him and I had him sit first. There is a three legged cat that live theres and roams around and kittens for adoption in the lobby. He behaved well and was fairly calm. He got just a bit excited when he saw some bigger dogs because they were excited and I think Spartacus wanted to play. I can say he was behaving better and I had more control over him than some of other big dogs and their owners. That was a good feeling. There was an older lady picking up her dog and she gushed over him, she told me her son had just adopted a rescued pit bull. She credited me for being a good doggy mommy for waiting and walking around in there with Spartacus to socialize him.

Thank you again for giving us a chance. He is special and has big sweet heart. ~Kelly

UPDATE January 12, 2010

Just wanted to give you a quick update on Sir. He's doing great in his new home. I think he likes being the only pet because he gets all of the attention. We got our fence put up so he has a big backyard to run around in. We take him with us as many places as we can, as he still loves his car rides. Have a great 2010!

Christy & Brian
