It's Puppy Time! Yeaaaaah!!! .... NOT! |
| It's that time of year when more and more Pit Bull puppies are being born into this world. For the average dogs the pet population is bad enough, but in the Pit Bull society, it's overwhelming! |

|
If you have never been to an animal shelter during this time of the year then you have no idea what a huge problem this is. Many shelters have non-adoption policies on Pit Bulls. Not because they have a personal agenda against Pit Bulls... Quite the opposite, in fact. Those restrictions are put in place in order to protect the dogs. Sadly, because of lack of resources allowing the staff to screen applicants, the only way shelters can prevent these poor dogs from falling in the wrong hands is by instating a non-adoption policy on breeds that attract more than their share of abuse and irresponsible owners.
Pit Bulls rank #1 when it comes to bad owners' magnets. Hence why rescue groups such as MPR work tirelessly to help those dogs and find them the homes they deserve and solutions to this terrible tragedy.
|
| Even for adorable, innocent little puppies such as these...
In the meantime, more than half of the dogs in animal shelters are unavailable for adoption because they are considered Pit Bulls. This means that if a loving family goes to the shelter to adopt a puppy and if the puppy they pick is a Pit Bull they will be turned away.
The only way a Pit Bull puppy will make it out of the shelter alive is if the original owner claims it back or if a Pit Bull rescue group is able to pull it out in time.
Problem is, a lot of times the original owners are the problem. The family or the breeder abandons the momma dog and puppies on the side of the road or they drop them off at the shelter, or simply allow them to get lost or stolen by lack of supervision. These people close their eyes to the over population problem and walk away not accepting the responsibility of their dog.
If MPR is able to, we pull puppies from local shelters before it is too late. The problem is so huge though that the majority of the puppies don't make it out alive. The public is not fully aware of the big picture either. Puppies are often kept in the back and euthanized quickly to avoid the spread of nasty viruses such as "parvo". So reality is hidden and not always in the face of those who need to see it.
Rescue groups only have so much space and when it's full we are left helpless to the puppies we see. To have to walk away from the cage of a baby Pit Bull that is nursing from it's momma, knowing that these babies won't make it out is a horrible feeling, one that Pit Bull rescue groups face every day. For these puppies sometimes it's only a few hours before it will be pulled away from its momma taken into a room and have a needle inserted into it's vein.
Please visit local animal Control and see first hand how bad the situation really is. See the countless pleading eyes watching you as you walk past their cages. Some of those dogs are new to the shelter and seem to not understand what has happened to them. Some others may have been confiscated and must endure a longer stay on death row. They know their fate and are jumping, barking and pawing at the kennel door trying to escape.
How is a baby deserving of this you ask?..... It's not.
This is just a little view into world of Pit Bull rescue and the fight we have on our hands every day. So take a little time and go to your local shelters. Look for Pit Bulls that are under a year old, and you will leave astounded at the cruel world that these dogs are born into. One that punishes them not because of a bad deed done, but because of their breed! Now try to close your eyes and not see these horrible images! Knowing that in 5 days the majority of the dogs you just saw will be dead, including the puppies ...just to make room for more with the same fate.
Please don't breed or buy while shelter pets die, Please Spay or Neuter your pet...... |

MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

TOPEKA, KS - City may scrap pit bull rules - June 26, 2010 - Pit bull confinement regs contribute to overrun in animal control budget - The city of Topeka, Kansas is considering the repeal of its 10 year old ordinance regulating the ownership of pit bulls. The action, proposed by Councilwoman Karen Heller, is expected to be considered this summer to replace the city's breed-specific ordinance regulating the ownership of pit bulls with rules that would instead regulate "dangerous dogs." Please write to the Topeka city officials and encourage them to move forward with this proposal.

Center, MO - Center, Mo., officials ban pit bulls in city; humane society representatives says it's an 'owner problem, not a dog problem' - June 22, 2010 -- NO grandfather clause - A recent ordinance banning pit bull dogs in the Ralls County community of Center is an effort at citizen protection by city officials who say they had no choice. But the Northeast Missouri Humane Society says the ordinance isn't the answer. "It's more an owner problem than it is actually a dog problem," said the shelter's administrator, Kurt Growenda. The Center City Council unanimously approved the ordinance at its June 2 meeting, enacting it that day. Center residents who own pit bulls must remove their dogs from within the city limits within 30 days. |
Crawford County, Arkansas - While addressing animal issues, Crawford County, Arkansas Justice of the Peace Sharon Partain advised the quorum court she plans to bring up an ordinance next month asking for a county ban on pit bulls. She said some constituents in the Uniontown area asked her to seek a ban. She instructed the quorum court's attorney, Chuck Baker, to draft the ordinance that, according to her, could potentially be passed at the July quorum court meeting. Unfortunately, JP Partain's e-mail information is not available on the county's website. Polite, respectful and informative letters and educational materials may be sent to the County Clerk:

Center, MO - Center approves pit bull ban - Jun 11, 2010 - The Center City Council has approved new animal ordinances. The first bans pit bulls. The second would allow the council to declare an animal to be dangerous if it bites or chases a person or attacks another animal. Animals that violate the law would have to be removed from city limits or destroyed. The ordinances were drafted after complaints. Several other Northeast Missouri communities have discussed or enacted similar bans. |
Kirksville, MO - Breed ban a polarizing issue - The City of Kirksville, Missouri is currently considering an ordinance that would regulate the ownership of "pit bulls" and "other animals deemed vicious." While the ordinance being drafted includes a grandfather clause, Councilman (and Mayor Pro Tem) Richard Detweiler is pushing for a total ban with no grandfather clause.
The article is confusing in that it indicates that Kirksville already has a vicious dog ordinance that includes pit bulls. However, a review of the city code does not support that statement. Kirksville has a generic vicious dog ordinance which, if properly enforced, would adequately address any vicious dog - not only those labeled as "pit bulls."
Please send your POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the Kirksville, Missouri officials and or call the city at 660-627-1225, Toll Free: 888-299-1223, 660-665-0940 (fax). Please also list viable alternatives and suggestions for their consideration, as well.
According to the article, the next possible time this issue could come up is June 7, and a public hearing will be held to gage the community's opinion on the ordinance. The city council meets the first & third Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. City Council Study Sessions are held the first & third Monday of every month at 4:30 p.m. City Hall Council Chambers |
speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does. |

CHARMING ROMEO |
Romeo is currently living the good life at MPR's mini shelter. He is such a happy goofball! Romeo prances when he walks and has the cutest wiggle-butt when he greets people. This fun-loving boy loves to roll on his back for a belly rub. He seems to always be in a good mood.
Romeo is on the small size for a male pit bull. About 45 Lbs. Romeo is very outgoing and has a great happy smile for everyone he meets. He loooooves people!
Romeo is a young adult male and seems eager to make doggy-friends. He will soon be introduced to compatible females.
As his name indicates, Romeo is a real charmer and very easy to fall in love with. If you are looking for a small size, super friendly Pit Bull who is always in a good mood and ready for a good time, Romeo is your man! |

| FEATURED VOLUNTEER ... June 2010 |
|
Vanessa Melchert |
|
This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Vanessa.
Vanessa opened her heart as a foster mom to Lucy Lou and Contessa as well as independently fostering a dog she and a friend rescued.
Vanessa spends most of her free time at MPR's mini-shelter taking care of
all our dogs that are not in foster homes ... she loves walking them, loving them up and playing with them. She's even fallen asleep (snuggle time!) on the couch with several of them at various times. She says that spending time with the dogs keeps her going and she'd be lost without them. She's always ready and willing to fill in on extra shifts or anything else when needed. If that isn't enough she also attends events when she's able to.
We are so very fortunate and thankful to have her on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you, Vanessa!

5/19/2010 UPDATE:
Tashi has been such a great companion and her personality has really come through! I couldn't ask for a better dog. She is still the same sweet, gentle girl that we saw at the MPR mini-shelter, but definitely has a playful puppy side! She loves squeaky toys and will pounce on them, push them under furniture to play hide and seek, and can literally entertain herself for hours :). I have gotten so many compliments on how well-behaved and beautiful she is from strangers....it's a good opportunity to talk about MPR! Anyway, the pictures include some of Tashi with me, my mom, my brother-in-law (who wants to steal her and take her to Florida ;)), and some horses behind my apartment complex. I hope you enjoy them! May 4, 2010 UPDATE
Hey, MPR!!
I just wanted to give you all an update on Sunny (Gloria the Hippo). She is doing incredibly well. She was perfect on the 5 hour drive home to AR and has grown into the happiest, most comical, sweetest and most athletic dog I have ever seen!
Her obedience training is going extremely well. She is very responsive and learns quickly. She loves to run and play. She is learning to catch a frisbee and loves being with the people she trusts.
She has met several dogs since I have had her and has gotten along well with all of them, especially her sister, Cornbread (Pembroke Welsh Corgi).
All of my family loves her as much as I do and she is terribly spoiled!
Thank you so much for trusting me to take one of your babies and for giving me the best hairy friend I have ever had! I couldn't ask for a better bully to share my heart with and to help educate others!
