Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. Most Pit Bulls at the shelter are euthanised 5 to 10 days after their arrival, depending on their case and if not claimed by their owner.

Some of the Pits are selected to be candidates for adoption via "Halfway Home Pet Adoptions" and are given a little more time. Though the dogs are not part of MPR's program, we have been asked by the shelter to help screen applications for Pit Bull type dogs.

When MPR has room, we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from the shelter. For the sake of our current dogs however, MPR can't bail dogs out until we make adoptions. Even if we could afford boarding (which we can't), we want to see our current dogs find loving homes before we bring more into the program.

MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.

By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!

Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization.

 BLOG... MAY 2010
  The sorrow of Momma dogs....

People often talk about the joy of watching the miracle of birth of puppies. This is particularly disturbing since we know only 1 in 600 Pit Bull born in this world will find a loving home. We know also, that nothing is more difficult than to find a home for a "momma dog". We currently have a few brave mothers in our program in dire need of a loving home. Lavender, Jaya, Xena, Promise, Merryweather, Sterling,...

Some people believe that a female dog should have at least one litter before being spayed. There is absolutely no justification to that belief. In fact, the longer you wait before spaying a female, the greater the chances she will develop cancer later in life.

A pregnancy is extremely hard on a female dog. MPR has rescued countless mama dogs who had given literally all they had to their pups and were on the brink of death when discovered. It takes months for a female to recover after a pregnancy. And if you think you are doing the dog a favor by letting her experience the joy of motherhood, please think again...

Like humans, canines need strong social structure to thrive and survive. In the wild, puppies stay under the protection of the pack and their parents until they are old enough to survive on their own. Only then, when the dogs are about a year old, some youngsters will leave the pack and move on, though many canines stay with their family for their entire life.

No six, seven or height week old puppy is strong enough to survive on its own. The dogs know that. Pulling an 8 week old puppy from a mama dog like humans do is like expecting a 2 year old baby to move out of his parents home, get a job and find an apartment. We are messing with nature when we remove puppies from their mother and siblings and place them in a home at 8 weeks old.

Dogs do not understand that we will be there to care for them. In the puppy's mind, he or she will die away from his "canine family", hence why puppies scream bloody murder the first few nights we bring them home. As for the mother, she has to witness her pups disappear one by one helplessly, and has no clue what will happen to them. We can't explain to her that the pups have found a new home and everything is ok. She believes they are getting lost and dying. Think about the emotional stress this causes a loving mother...

With Pet overpopulation causing more death than happy endings, and knowing that momma dogs suffer a great deal physically and emotionally when having and losing puppies, do we really need to add more puppies to this world so we can witness the miracle of birth? The miracle of birth when it comes to companion animals these days is simply a step towards euthanasia.

Please don't breed or buy while shelter pets die,
Please Spay or Neuter your pet......
And please, please adopt a homeless Mama dog this month!

MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

 BSK NEWS ... MAY 2010

Kirksville, MO - Breed ban a polarizing issue - The City of Kirksville, Missouri is currently considering an ordinance that would regulate the ownership of "pit bulls" and "other animals deemed vicious." While the ordinance being drafted includes a grandfather clause, Councilman (and Mayor Pro Tem) Richard Detweiler is pushing for a total ban with no grandfather clause.

The article is confusing in that it indicates that Kirksville already has a vicious dog ordinance that includes pit bulls. However, a review of the city code does not support that statement. Kirksville has a generic vicious dog ordinance which, if properly enforced, would adequately address any vicious dog - not only those labeled as "pit bulls."

Please send your POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the Kirksville, Missouri officials and or call the city at 660-627-1225, Toll Free: 888-299-1223, 660-665-0940 (fax). Please also list viable alternatives and suggestions for their consideration, as well.

According to the article, the next possible time this issue could come up is June 7, and a public hearing will be held to gage the community's opinion on the ordinance. The city council meets the first & third Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. City Council Study Sessions are held the first & third Monday of every month at 4:30 p.m. City Hall Council Chambers

speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

 CENTERFOLD... MAY 2010
Merryweather was a mother....

Hi! My name is Merryweather and I am looking for a new forever home! I am a sweet, blue brindle female Pit Bull. I am a year to two old, spayed, and vaccinated. Oh, did I mention how incredibly sweet I am?

I was a mother to a liter of puppies and was lucky enough to be pulled from a shelter before I ran out of time. The good people of MPR saw how absolutely sweet I am and decided to bring me into their program and help me find my forever family. What a lucky thing that was for me!

I am a sweet, trusting, affectionate, loving girl that deserves to have a family love me for the rest of my life. MPR wants everyone to know that I would make a great fit for just about any family.

So, please open your heart and home for me this Mother's Day month and let me show you just how much love I have to give. And if you decide to give me a chance, I won't let you down.

Merryweather

 FEATURED VOLUNTEER ... MAY 2010

This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Tammy.

Tammy opened her heart as well as her home as a foster mom. She has loving cared for Pistachio, Chance, Bonzo and many more... We don't know where she finds the time as she's also a mother to three young children including a toddler, an adult dog and a cat. One thing we are sure of is that any puppy being fostered in her home is receiving lots of socialization!

If all that wasn't enough, she even makes time to help care for the boarded dogs at MPR's mini-shelter and helps with and attends events when she's able to.

We are so very fortunate and thankful to have her on board. From the bottom of our hearts ... thank you, Tammy!

 HAPPY ENDINGS ... MAY 2010
Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers  going....

4/3/2010 UPDATE:

Waylon is doing well- running the show as usual. Waylon's girlfriends are also doing well. The black one (Lilly) is my wife's dog and the brindle is Annie. Annie belonged to an ex-girlfriend of 6 years ago who was moving and couldn't take Annie with her. My plan was to foster her and try to find a home since I already had two dogs. I'm sure you all know how this played out......she became one of the crew and my wife and I became her new forever home.

April 28, 2010 UPDATE

Sorry for the months of delay. We still don't have a good family picture of everyone together. I will try to send more pics of Axis and the family.

Axis is fitting in pretty well. He and Mo (the cocker) have no issues. We have yet to get him and cats out for extended times, but are working with it as we have time. He actually did great with them last Saturday. This made me very happy. Axis does have some separation anxiety when we leave, but when at home is a just fine. Jen is working nights so Axis is not alone very much at all. We tried leaving him out and his anxiety made him chew things and go to the bathroom in the house. I bought him a large 6 x 9 X 4 cage (outdoor) and have put it in our basement storage for him to be in when we leave the house. We have him on medication for the separation times. He goes everywhere with us when he can so we don't have to leave him alone long. We are working on selling both houses in hopes to move up towards liberty, but remain on the Kansas City limits just outside of Liberty. When that is done he will have a yard again. He is really sweet, does not bother anyone or bark at anything. I hope this kind of gives you a little bit of what he has been up to.

Thanks Bob Wallace
