MPR MINI-SHELTER 2011

MPR is so thankful for all the wonderful and exciting things happening this year. We continue to have astounding new additions to our volunteer group and new forever homes for our pit bulls in need. Our newest endeavor in 2010 however, was the establishment of a new and improved MPR Mini-Shelter.

The mini-shelter allows MPR to save more dogs from being euthanized by placing them in a temporary home until a foster home presents itself. In actuality it would be more accurate to call this oasis the Ritz Carlton of doggie shelters.

At the mini-shelter a caretaker is there 24/7. We call this volunteer “The Den Mother” and our dogs couldn't be happier to have her there. She has even been known to get up in the middle of the night and sooth a new and scared soul back to sleep.
The dogs are kept in a home-like environment as the shelter is located in a private house. When the dogs are not resting in their crates, they have the opportunity to run around a whole acreage of fenced in yard! In addition to that yard, they also have a separate fenced in area that can be used to sun bath, play, or just hang out. When the weather permits, the dogs have access to extra large (10X10) outdoor kennels, complete with comfortable dog houses and Kuranda beds.
MPR Volunteers are on a feeding/exercise schedule which ensures the dogs get visited a minimum of three times a day. The happy gang spends time inside or on the patio cuddling on couches, running around the backyard, or playing with toys. All this attention helps the dogs learn house manners, master crate training, and socializes them so they can go out and be ambassadors for the breed.

MPR's mini-shelter is a work in progress. We need your help to keep improving this life-saving Pit Bull resort in 2011.

We are asking for our supporters to consider making a donation to our mini-shelter fund. It is our goal to create a place of such comfort and happiness that the dogs in our program can’t tell their new forever home, from their old temporary home. Many of them have been abandoned, abused, negleted and have never nown love and goof care before arriving in our program.... One thing they all need is love and a comfy couch to cuddle on....

We look forward to an exciting year in MPR. Help us make 2011 a great one!

MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... Protect Your Pet from Winter's Woes - As the cold winter chill descends upon us for another year, it's worth remembering that we aren't the only ones who feel the bite of Jack Frost nipping at our noses. In many areas, winter is a season of bitter cold and numbing wetness. Help your pets remain happy and healthy during the colder months by following these simple guidelines provided by HSUS. Breed Discriminatory Fiscal Impact Calculator - Tool for municipalities in understanding the real cost of enforcing bans and restrictions on dogs because of their looks. The study that led to the calculator pointed out that dogs often identified as pit bulls may be, in fact, another breed entirely, which raises the question on how to properly identify animals that under the law might be banned.

Dog Training with Victoria Stilwell - Top 10 Basic Dog Training Tips - Excellent training tips written by Victoria Stilwell. Five Rules of Positive Dog Training - Positive reinforcement (i.e., giving the dog a reward in the form of praise, play, food or toys when it behaves in a way that you like) has been shown to be the most effective training method. Positive training equals positive results.

Dog Training and the Myth of Alpha-Male Dominance - Victoria was profiled in a recent TIME Magazine article entitled "Dog Training and the Myth of Alpha-Male Dominance." In the article, Victoria helps highlight the differences between traditional dominance-based methods and her brand of positive reinforcement philosophies.

ASPCA Kids and Pets Interaction Guide - A wonderful resource for parents to raise their own awareness of children and pet interactions and what's appropriate at each phase of a child's development. The family pet is a best friend for many children - a companion who not only provides unconditional love, but who also teaches them about friendship, responsibility, loyalty, and empathy.
How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of.

   BSL NEWS January 2011

Camdenton, MO - Camdenton officials work to strengthen pit-bull ban - Breed ban grandfather clause to be removed. An amendment to the existing city ordinance regarding pit bulls in Camdenton has been brought to the Board of Aldermen. If the ordinance passes, it would completely outlaw the possession of pit bulls within city limits. The existing ordinance only permits pit bulls licensed with the city prior to 1988. UPDATE [1/11/2011] - Camdenton OKs changes to pit-bull wording - Several proposed changes to the Camdenton ordinance outlawing pit bulls within the city limits was given a nod of approval by the Board of Aldermen at last week's meeting. According to City Administrator Brenda Colter, on a vote of 5-0 (with one absent) aldermen approved several changes designed to strengthen a city ordinance that makes it illegal to keep pit bulls within the city limits.
speak! or rollover! the choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

   MPR CENTERFOLD January 2011
   Dashing Dollar

Dollar has a big goofy personality and is very playful. He is so excited to be with people that his whole body wags with his tail. He is young and full of energy. Dollar gives a lot of love, hugs you around your neck and slobbers all over your face. Bully lovin' can't get better than this! :)

Upon first meeting Dollar, he's a bit shy and will bark at a new person but he warms up quickly. Dollar is protective and will require responsible ownership and positive leadership.

Dollar is housebroken and crate trained. He's high energy, loves to play, loves to run and would be a great agility dog. He knows how to sit, lay down, roll over, and plays fetch. He's super smart and enjoys learning new things.

How can you resist that kiss-a-bull face? Won't you open your heart and home and make Dollar's dream of having a loving home come true this new year?

  FEATURED VOLUNTEER January 2011
   Tom & Angelyna Baker

Featured VoM

This month, MPR wants to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteers, Tom and Angelyna.

Tom and Angelyna opened their hearts and home as foster parents in July of 2010. The Baker's have fostered Triton, Tobias and are now currently fostering Praline. Tom's skills are also helpful as a member of the Maintenance Crew for the Mini Shelter and assisting MPR in keeping the Mini Shelter facilities in working order or with any upgrades that are needed.

Tom has recently taken on the task of restructuring and developing an effective Medical record handling process for our rescue dogs.

And if that isn't enough, they have also attended and assisted at adoption events. Tom and Angelyna... your caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and the dogs. We are so very fortunate and thankful to have you both on board. Thank you!

   MPR HAPPY ENDINGS
Happy Updates are the fuel that keeps rescuers going...

Things are going so great with Walrus! We love him to death. He's been such a good boy for us- we can leave him out free to roam the house while we're gone because he never chews anything up and is so well potty trained (we even taught him to only go potty in one spot in the yard.) He gets along great with our cat and I even catch them napping together on his bed quite often.

My boyfriend is a firefighter and loves to bring Walrus up to the station when I'm working or out of town- all the firefighters love him there and give him so much attention. (so he of course loves to go there, too:) He's such a sweetheart and only wants everybody to love him.

I'm so glad I adopted him and can't imagine my life without this sweet, friendly clown. Thanks so much for saving his life! (Oh, and I almost forgot- he's my running partner and I love to look down and see the enormous grin on his face while we run! I think it might be the only thing he loves more than cuddles! Anybody who passes us while he's running can't help but smile at him:)

Hi! I can't believe it's been almost nine months either!! Chance was renamed Vinnie very quickly after adoption. It fits his spunky personality perfectly! Vinnie is a very handsome, almost one year old boy, and weighs in at about seventy svelte pounds now! I can only imagine what he will weigh when he starts packing on the muscle this next year! He is a very active boy who never sits still, unless he is laying down chewing on one of his bones or toys - which is his FAVORITE pastime. He is a chewer! He also loves to play with my male Siamese, Duke. They go non stop!!

Vinnie loves everybody and has yet to meet an enemy (except for the chihuahua down the street that he can't quite figure out what it is...lol). He hides behind my legs when we pass it on our walks! Overall he is just a great buddy and I couldn't ask for anything more!! Thank you guys for all you do!

Adrienne

Jager (Knut) is doing great! I decided to go back to school so I am living with 5 other guys and everyone loves him. He is best friends with everyone he meets. We have a nice fenced in back yard and a park about 4 blocks away. He doesnt realy ever go in is kennel any more. I sleep with him at night (not much sleep on my part because he snores like crazy) and during the day there is always people around because of all my roomates. I will try and get pictures soon!

Cole Kruse

I have attached a photo of Fatty (formerly Freedom) being the mother/puppy that she is to my male chihuahua, Chino. Chino is very small and Fatty allows him to pretend fight her. He can only reach her feet. Every once in a while, she lifts her foot up and makes a gurgling noise to keep him interested. When I first got her, she only wanted to sit on my couch, which is a no no for me. (o:

She is now hard to get inside because she has a very large backyard to chase squirrels in. She never wants to be inside and is the sweetest dog in the area. Everyone loves her, but she is watchful of her yard... until you call her name and then she tries to lick you to death.

I gave her the nickname, Fatty, because she is very large. Even on diets, she does not lose weight but I enjoy her butterball tummy. She is very active and hyper. She is just "big-boned!" Lol! I never call her Freedom and her name tag also says Fatty now. She seems to love her name and hates when someone takes her collar off... She will lay down and wait for her collar to be washed before she gets back up. I just love her to death ...

Thanks again for bringing her into my life. She is greatly appreciated!!!
