Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bull Dogs
SPAY & NEUTER
SNKC CAN HELP! |
Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

*** URGENT DOGS ***
Those are "some" of the countless Pit Bulls held at the Kansas City Animal Control facility. When the shelter is full, which happens on a regular basis, Pit Bulls are often the first ones on the euthanasia list due to their high volumes and difficulty to place. If interested in any of these critical and urgent dogs PLEASE GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE SHELTER at 4400 Raytown Road in Kansas City, Missouri, 64129 to save their lives.
Though we do our very best to pull Pit Bulls from shelters everytime we can, we have no room to help all of those dogs. Each time we make an adoption, it opens the door to save a shelter dog.
MPR dogs have been evaluated and proven to have good disposition and stable temperament. They have been socialized, are receiving training and most of them are housebroken and crate trained. When a MPR dog finds a good home, it makes room in our program to rescue a shelter dog.
By opening your home to a MPR dog, you are saving TWO LIVES!
Once we bring in a new shelter dog in the program we can then proceed with proper temperament evaluation, proper training and socialization.

MPR MINI-SHELTER 2011
MPR is so thankful for all the wonderful and exciting things happening this year. We continue to have astounding new additions to our volunteer group and new forever homes for our pit bulls in need. Our newest endeavor in 2010 however, was the establishment of a new and improved MPR Mini-Shelter.
The mini-shelter allows MPR to save more dogs from being euthanized by placing them in a temporary home until a foster home presents itself. In actuality it would be more accurate to call this oasis the Ritz Carlton of doggie shelters.
 |
At the mini-shelter a caretaker is there 24/7. We call this volunteer “The Den Mother” and our dogs couldn't be happier to have her there. She has even been known to get up in the middle of the night and sooth a new and scared soul back to sleep. |
 |
The dogs are kept in a home-like environment as the shelter is located in a private house. When the dogs are not resting in their crates, they have the opportunity to run around a whole acreage of fenced in yard! In addition to that yard, they also have a separate fenced in area that can be used to sun bath, play, or just hang out. When the weather permits, the dogs have access to extra large (10X10) outdoor kennels, complete with comfortable dog houses and Kuranda beds. |
|
 |
MPR Volunteers are on a feeding/exercise schedule which ensures the dogs get visited a minimum of three times a day. The happy gang spends time inside or on the patio cuddling on couches, running around the backyard, or playing with toys. All this attention helps the dogs learn house manners, master crate training, and socializes them so they can go out and be ambassadors for the breed. |
MPR's mini-shelter is a work in progress. We need your help to keep improving this life-saving Pit Bull resort in 2011.
We are asking for our supporters to consider making a donation to our mini-shelter fund. It is our goal to create a place of such comfort and happiness that the dogs in our program can’t tell their new forever home, from their old temporary home. Many of them have been abandoned, abused, negleted and have never nown love and goof care before arriving in our program.... One thing they all need is love and a comfy couch to cuddle on....
We look forward to an exciting year in MPR. Help us make 2011 a great one! |

MPR shelter is a life-saving opportunity for dogs that have no other options. For dogs that came from a difficult situation, a stay at the shelter is often a step up in life. But shelter life needs to be a temporary solution. In order to find a home, our rescue dogs need to live in a home and learn how to be well-behaved family companions. You can make a difference... PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts. They desperately need YOU!

Blanket Drive - Thank You! |
MPR's blanket drive for the month of February was a huge success and we can not begin to thank everyone who donated. We now have a big stock of new and gently used blankets (200 - 300+) to keep our doggies very warm and comfortable.
Missouri Pit Bull Rescue would like to say a HUGE thank you to Craig Piburn the manager of Olathe Brookside Barkery and Bath for helping make room at all the stores for the blankets. We also want to say thank you to all the Brookside Barkery and Bath locations for helping and making the blanket drive successful by making signs, gathering and storing our donated blankets.
To everyone who donated to the blanket drive thank you for helping the Missouri Pit Bull Rescue dogs and we know if they could talk they would be saying thank you, thank you, thank you! All the dogs now have thick warm beds to lay on and they could not be happier. From the bottom of our hearts the volunteers here at Missouri Pit Bull Rescue thank you all again for your help and generosity. Happy tail wags and big Bully kisses being sent to each of you! |

Breed Discriminatory Fiscal Impact Calculator - Tool for municipalities in understanding the real cost of enforcing bans and restrictions on dogs because of their looks. The study that led to the calculator pointed out that dogs often identified as pit bulls may be, in fact, another breed entirely, which raises the question on how to properly identify animals that under the law might be banned. |

ASPCA Kids and Pets Interaction Guide - A wonderful resource for parents to raise their own awareness of children and pet interactions and what's appropriate at each phase of a child's development. The family pet is a best friend for many children - a companion who not only provides unconditional love, but who also teaches them about friendship, responsibility, loyalty, and empathy. |
How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of. |
Seward County, KS - Pits bulls or No pit bulls - Seward County, KS has had a breed ban since 1991, and recently passed a resolution that eliminated the grandfather clause. Now, a resident has requested a new grandfather clause or elimination of the ban. The county commissioners have mixed opinions about it, with some supporting repeal, and others opposing. This may provide an opportunity to encourage the county to repeal the breed-specific portion of their dog law. Residents and others are encouraged to send polite, respectful correspondence in support of an effective breed-neutral approach to animal control to guide the county administators and commissioners toward reasonable, breed-neutral revisions.
|
Fulton, MO - Fulton City Council is creating committee for dog problem - Recent dog attacks in Fulton had the City Council Tuesday evening taking a look at the animal control ordinance. While a resident of Fulton, Missouri expressed a desire to see "pit bulls" banned, the Fulton city council appears to not be interested in pursuing a breed specific ordinance. However, as they are looking to make improvements to their current ordinance, this is a good opportunity to give feedback, suggestions, and effective breed-neutral ordinances to the Fulton city officials consideration. Please offer polite, constructive correspondence and sample breed-neutral ordinances to guide the council toward reasonable, breed-neutral revisions.

| Kirksville, MO - Finalized BSL Reading - During a study session March 7, 2011, the Kirksville, MO city council discuss the proposed ordinance that regulates the ownership of "pit bulls" (translation..any dog that LOOKS LIKE a pit bull). The council would like to have the ordinance finalized in time for the March 21, 2011 council meeting. The council meets at the Kirksville City Hall Council Chambers at 6:00 p.m. Please send your POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the Kirksville, Missouri officials. Please also list viable alternatives and suggestions for their consideration, as well. |
| Mexico, MO - Work session regarding animal control precedes regular council meeting - Looks like after a very thorough review by the Animal Code Review Committee, city officials have decided to steer clear of breed specific legislation!
The new ordinance will appear on the March 14, 2011 meeting agenda.
|
| Kirksville, MO - Finalized BSL to be discussed, March 7 - Kirksville city council will hold a study session on March 7, at 4:30 PM, in the second floor conference room at City Hall, 201 South Franklin Street, Kirksville, MO 63501. During the study session, the final draft of the revised animal ordinance will be presented. The animal ordinance contains breed-specific regulations; all "pit bull"-type dogs are declared "restricted animals," and owners are subject to a long list of special requirements. The council anticipates finalizing the draft at this study session, for introduction and first reading during the March 21 council meeting. The revised ordinance can be read here (ordinance begins on page 14): http://www.kirksvillecity.com/filestorage/767/779/781/3838/March_7_2011.pdf |
Speak! or rollover!
The choice dog owners need to make - Know the animal ordinances in your town. Don't just be a good pet owner. Insist that your town hold all pet owners to the same high standards to which you hold yourself, whatever kind of dog they share their lives with. Breed specific laws are cruel, and they don't make our communities safer. Humane care of companion animals does.

Charming, Loving Bassam |
Unbelievable... This adorable little guy obviously had to endure more than his share of torment in life, and yet he still loves people... and smiles... With all his little heart....
Bassam is an awesome, sweet, adorable and irresistible little guy... A perfect representative of the breed... inside and out...
Bassam is 12 - 24 months old, gets along well with his foster sister pittie, is wonderful with kids and is very responsive to training. He can sit and shake paw. He is crate trained and housebroken. Bassam loves car rides and walks and he is very mindful of where his human is at all times. He wants to be with humans at all times.
He is very good when told to sit and actually knows how to shake so when he wants your attention and praise he'll stick his paw out to let you know he wants to shake... super cute!! Bassam would make someone such a wonderful and loving pet.
Bassam is a very good boy and is longing for a home and parents to call all his very own! Please open your heart and welcome this lucky charm into your home and family this St. Patty's Day and let him fill it with his special charm and love. |

Sarah & Brent McHugh |
Sarah & Brent started volunteering with MPR last May. They have a weekly shelter shift, transport dogs and attend events, are on the fundraising committee, and just started helping with sponsor coordination. Ellie, the tan dog in the picture with Sarah is a pit mix and was a complete accident. Sarah went to Petsmart to buy cat food and Ellie was there with a St. Louis rescue group smiling at Sarah. Sarah fell instantly in love and took her home on the spot. Brent was out of town that weekend, so he was a little surprised when he came home. Ellie has been so wonderful and loving and she inspired Brent and Sarah to volunteer and help more dogs like her. Layla was returned to MPR last August because her owner was having a baby and didn't want her anymore. Because she is a senior dog and had been in a home for so long, Sarah couldn't stand the thought of her going to the shelter. Sarah volunteered to foster Layla short term until a more permanent solution came along. Needless to say, Sarah foster failed almost instantly. She is so devoted, loving and calm that Sarah couldn't possibly give her up. Layla and Ellie get along well and their cat is so excited to have another, less rambuctious, dog in the house.
Brent and Sarah have really enjoy volunteering with MPR and are excited to watch MPR continue to grow. Sarah tells us that all of the volunteers are so wonderful and their experience with MPR has truly been a lot of fun. |

Kira (Windchill) is doing great! She has really grown into herself and has the best personality. She spends her days sleeping, playing with babies and cuddling (what the life she has). I think the cutest thing is when she lays down she lets out this long "sigh", like her life is so hard :) I need to get it on video. She is also enjoying her first time in a fenced in backyard at our new house and just loves the freedom that it provides her. I have attached some professional pictures that we had done about a year ago.

Sir Remington Greystoke (Cappuccino) and Miss Dixie Winchester (Calliope) and Zima Warrior Princess (we fostered her from Halfway Home and no one would adopt her, so we did!). Remington is 80 lbs, Dixie is already 68 and she is still growing! Her head is so big and she is such a klutz, an akward toddler, really, her 1st birthday isn't til March.
Remi is still VERY sensitive...he must have been kicked and left out in the backyard all the time. He hates to have his butt touched, and if one of the girls are laying next to him & they touch his butt he growls & gets up for a sec then goes right back to his spot. He will only go potty on a leash, never in the back yard but that's good for us, lots of walks...especially when the weather is nice ... its 2 miles on one of them. They all love each other so much & Dixie took right to Zima...definitely replacing her sister Thalia. Those 2 are inseparable.
Oh! And Remi's allergy is not food related but really it is grass which does suck but since he really is a cat it doesn't matter. More photos can be seen here.
Thanks again.

Hi. Just wanted to bring you a long overdue update on Lucy. It's been a little more than 6 months, and we are just SO fortunate to have Lucy with us. And I know she is happy and feels at home and loved. Some pictures are attached so you can see her big goofy smile and how much we spoil her.
Lucy has gained weight since day two when she ate her way through 9 cups of food! She cut back herself as she filled out, and now weighs about 70+ pounds. She is probably 2-3 pounds overweight so we are trying to minimize any more weight gain. She eats about 4 cups of food daily plus a couple healthy "treats" like broccoli, string beans, sweet potatoes, brown rice, peanut butter, or a few bites of lean cooked meat. Like most dogs, Lucy LOVES to eat! She has a beautiful coat - like velvet, is strong and athletic, yet gentle and loving.
She tolerates the cats very well. She used to play bow to our daughter's manx cat (before she took him back to CA). Arc was very much like a dog in his demeanor. Lucy would bow, and Arc would dash behind a big chair with his pupils dilated and butt swinging, then bound out and chase Lucy. Lucy would run, then turn and chase Arc. It was really fun to watch! The other cats don't play, although Archie will walk underneath Lucy and rub against her legs. If it gets to be too much, she just leaves.
Lucy becomes more affectionate every day, climbing on the couch to cuddle, rolling over for a tummy rub, or just trying to sit on us. She loves to play, something she didn't seem to know much about when we first brought her home. She has her Lucy toys and guards them from the cats, although she will steal their catnip mice whenever she can!
So, we all love Lucy with her big smile and large brown eyes. And thank you, not only for making it possible for us to have her, but for all you do in your daily work, taking care of and finding forever homes for those animals in need. We can't imagine life right now without Lucy. She is a blessing.
