Missouri Pitbull Rescue Has So Much to be Thankful for This Year ...
|
|
This November Missouri Pitbull Rescue would like to focus on two things. One: all of the wonderful Pit Bulls and their owners out there who are making a difference in people's lives and restoring the breed's reputation. And two: the wonderful and caring people that sponsor our dogs without which we would not have been able to help nearly as many pit bulls as we have to date
First off, it seems like any news that you hear about pit bulls in the media for the past several years is more than likely casting the breed in an unfavorable light. The hysteria that surrounds this breed is at an all time high and makes for great ratings for news stations around the country when they air negative (and many times "doctored") stories about pit bulls.
But what about the stories that you aren't hearing on the news? The stories that show the true character, devotion and loyalty of this lovable breed? The stories about pit bulls as service dogs, search and rescue teams, drug sniffing assistants to the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the thousands of pit bulls that never do anything "exceptional" but do happen to test higher on the American Temperament Test than Golden Retrievers and Border Collies?
|

Popsicle, U.S. Customs' most decorated drug detection dog
| Sorry folks, those stories don't generate enough hype to make the ten o'clock news.
These stories that you don't hear however do mean a lot to Missouri Pit bull Rescue. This November while thinking about what we have to be thankful for, MPR would like to thank all the wonderful Pit Bulls out there making a difference and being ambassadors for the breed. |
From Popsicle, US Customs' most decorated drug detecting dog, to Cheyenne, Dakota and Tahoe, the three search and rescue Pit Bulls who helped the search efforts of the astronauts during the 2000 space shuttle disaster. Pit bulls have proven time and time again their capacity to make wonderful civil servants, therapy dogs and companions for the disabled.

| MPR would also like to acknowledge all the other pit bulls out there who have never made the news. The pit bulls that have never done anything more than provide a wonderful companion for a lucky family or greeted their owner excitedly at the door with a wiggly butt and tons of bully kisses. |
Birthday Bullies
| To every pit bull out there that disproves their stereotype every day by doing nothing but being a huge dork and bringing a smile to someone's face, MPR is thankful for you.
For every great owner who raises a well-adjusted happy bully, loves them and cares for them unconditionally, and spays or neuters them to ensure a long, healthy life, MPR is thankful for you as well.
|
For every one responsible pit bull owner out there, we are one step closer to restoring our beloved breed to what they once were.
Lastly, and most importantly, MPR would like to thank all of its sponsors. We are forever grateful for any tiny bit of assistance and support we receive. These wonderful group of people help provide MPR dogs with food, shelter, medical care as well as fun stuff like toys, treats and bones! |
Sgt. Stubby |
| MPR would not be anywhere near as successful as we are without the constant support of our dedicated sponsors. The difference they have made in the lives of the dogs we have saved as well as in our lives is infinite and could never be measured on any scale. From the bottom of our hearts, everyone involved with Missouri Pitbull Rescue would like to thank MPR's current sponsors: Chris Letourneau, Elan Wright, Misty Freeman, Tammy & Rob, Thad Adkins, Jeff & Marisol, James & Christina McClung, Barbara Parish, Gary & Genene Hamilton, Suzanne Adam, Wayne & Betty Howard, Nate Dyer, Leanne Frank, M. Ambrose, Clayton Kuhn, Sharon Medearis, Jody & Vic, Diane Dazio, Nicole Gagne, Roma-Dakini Belladonna, LuAnn Touchman, Susan Johnson, Suzanne Fritsch, Charlyne Hecker, Carrie Wilkerson and Ruth Ramondino. Also, last but not least, thank you to ALL of our past and future sponsors. |
| Happy Thanksgiving everyone! |

WHAT PIT BULLS MUST ENDURE....
3 tragic and very sad cases that illustrate so well what Pit Bulls most endure in our society... And some call them monsters.... Really, who's the monster here...?
MPR is trying to help those poor dogs but all our foster homes are full. Boarding is $200.00 a month per dog... Those dogs are all in dire need of medical attention.... Please help us help them.
Our biggest need right now; Committed foster homes. |

Sir Love-A-Lot
|

Poetic Justice |
Hacked with a machete....
This brave boy was rescued by a good Samaritan and brought to a vet clinic with severe injuries to the head, which appear to have been inflicted with a knife or a machete... Phoenix was very scared when we first met him but that didn't last long. He quickly realized that no one would ever hurt him again.... |
Abandoned, sick, hungry...
2 very sweet Pit Bulls found their way to a good samaritan's porch somehow, begging for a little attention, a place to rest and a little bit of food. MPR was contacted but we have no room in our program right now. We are posting their pictures in case someone can help.... Please... |
Covered in old scars & fresh wounds. The dogs are malnourished, weaken by infections and lack of food and most likely infested with parasites. Yet, they are unbelievably sweet and loving.. Gentle, calm and craving love, they seem desperate for attention and a safe place to recuperate... |

Pit Bulls Are NOT VICIOUS!!!!!!!
I am so f*ckin' tired of listening to the uneducated talk about how "dangerous" Pit Bulls are! Michael Vick is a punk criminal, and anyone who fights dogs, trains dogs for fighting, or would abuse a Pit Bull to the point of them being considered "vicious," should be hammered into pulp.
Let's first clear some sh*t up... |
 |
There is NO SUCH THING AS A VICIOUS DOG BREED!
You heard me correctly. No breed is any more, or less "vicious" than another. Yes, some breeds are more suited to be victorious during physical confrontation. And the "Pit Bull" is one of many such breeds. Let me try to educate you a little about "Pit Bulls." I use the quotes because I know for a fact, that most people don't even know what a "Pit Bull" is, or what they were even really bred for. |
Read a little bit of this...
Pit Bulls do NOT have locking jaws. Their jaws are no different than any other breed.
Pit Bulls do not TURN on their owners . We have this stupid notion of giving dogs more credit than they deserve. Dogs don't have motive, they have instinct. There are always reasons for behavior. No dog just decides "Hey..I'm going to bite this kid." The kid has to invade the dog's territory. Just as you would defend your home from uninvited intruders, so will any dog. Aggression follows specific patterns. Every dog will signal through body language its discontent. When those signs are continually ignored, the dog resorts to using its teeth. This is true of all dogs, not just Pit Bulls.
A pit bull is, more often than not, a general breed name slapped upon a member of any of a number of breeds of dogs developed from the English Bulldog. This is due to the overwhelming amount of misinformation, and mis-identification of dog breeds.
That's right...That includes the American Pit Bull Terrier, The Staffordshire Terrier, The American Bulldog, English Bulldog, Bull Mastiff, Argentinian Mastiff, Bull Terrier, and a good percentage of the Mastiff / Molosser family of dogs.
"Bull Dogs" are named due to their main purpose of being used as farming animals. Their main purpose was to bring down bulls for whatever stock use the farmer deemed by biting them in the nose until they were subdued. Bulldogs were bred to be powerful and tenacious. To not give up on their working task. This characteristic remains in the Pit Bull today, and is the main reason they are used for fighting. Because the breed is unwilling to submit during physical exertion. Originally, a positive trait for farming dogs, now bastardized by assholes who fight them.
All Bulldogs are working dogs by heritage, not fighting dogs . It was not until they were cross-bred by MAN with terrier breeds that they were used in fighting. MANKIND created the aggression through breed manipulation. They were also bred to be intelligent and non-aggressive toward their handlers.
With proper breeding, DOG toward HUMAN aggression IS NOT a characteristic of the American Pit Bull Terrier at all in any form. However, DOG toward DOG aggression IS a characteristic of most terriers , including Pit Bulls .
According to the AKC:
"The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers."
and...
"APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. "
and finally...
" it would take torture and abuse to turn a TRUE APBT into a watch dog."
This being said, it is extremely important that anyone choosing to own any of the breeds classified as "Pit Bulls," be extremely vigilant in training them. Pit Bulls, as with any dog, can be aggressive if they are mistreated. Also, left to their own devices, just like ALL other breeds, Pit Bulls will establish a heirarchy in the pack.
This is NATURAL ANIMAL BEHAVIOR!! All species do this. Dogs, Fish, Simians, Felines, Insects, Humans...
It is the owner's responsibility to teach their dog. Lack of proper socialization, or training can lead to a dog with aggressive tendencies towards humans. This is absolutely contrary to the natural tendencies of the breed. They are naturally nurturing dogs. But with an uneducated owner, Pit Bulls, just like any large breed can become very dangerous dogs.
Don't let the uninformed idiots on any radio or TV station. paint a distorted picture of these dogs. They are awesome. I do not own one. I happen to be a German Shepherd guy. But, I have been around them all my life, and when the owner shows proper responsibility in raising them, there is no more loving, friendly, safer dog than a Pit Bull.
There are no bad dogs...just ignorant, lazy owners.

The assassination of a breed through biased reporting
Consider four separate incidents that happened in the span of a few days…
- August 17, 2007 - A Labrador mix attacks a 70-year old man sending him to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers arrived at the scene and the dog is shot after charging the officers. This incident was reported in ONE article and only in the local paper.

- August 20, 2007 - A 6-year-old boy is hospitalized after having his ear torn off and receiving severe bites to the head by a medium-sized mixed breed dog. This attack was reported in ONE article and only in the local paper.
- August 21, 2007 - A 59-year-old woman is attacked in her home by two Pit bulls and is hospitalized with severe injuries. This attack was reported in over TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY articles in national and international newspapers, as well as major television news networks, including CNN, MSNBC and FOX.

People routinely cite media coverage as “proof” that pit bulls are more dangerous than other dogs. Costly and ineffective public policy decisions are being made on the basis of such "proof". While this biased reporting is not only lethal to an entire population of dogs ; sensationalized media coverage endangers the public by misleading them about the real factors in canine aggression.

NFL Must Stop Fumbling on Dog fighting
Just weeks after Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's Virginia property was raided and evidence of a massive, illegal dogfighting operation was found, another National Football League star jumped into the fray. Defending Vick's alleged involvement in dogfighting, Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis declared, "I think people should mind their business...I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, his dog; if that's what he wants to do, do it. Tue, April 3, 2007 - Pit Bull Refuses to bite, so owner did....
The owner of a pit bull bit a policeman after his dog ran away during a confrontation with officers, daily Diario de Noticias reported on Tuesday.
Two policemen stopped the dog owner for walking the animal without a leash and a muzzle on Sunday in Cova da Moura -- a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Lisbon.
The man threatened the officers with his dog, but the animal bolted leaving the 35-year-old to grapple with both policemen. The owner bit one of the policemen on the wrist while the other suffered a broken finger in the scuffles, the newspaper reported. The owner is under house arrest while police are still looking for the pit bull, according to the daily.
