MPR Current Events
MPR
is having a great month for adoptions! We recently
saved four urgent pit bull puppies from
a town with a
breed ban, three of which have already been adopted;
and we placed several adult dogs—Billy the Kid,
Midnight and Kong (one of our long-time dogs who had
been in boarding for over a year)!! In addition, we are
working hard every day to educate pit bull owners throughout
the Midwest about responsible pet ownership.
Our
next adoption events are planned for May 16th, 22,
23. and June 12th and 13th. We will have details posted
on www.mprgroup.net and
we look forward to seeing you!!

you are interested in helping out with our 2nd Annual
Garage Sale in June or have items to donate for the
garage sale, please contact one of our volunteers at

Breed
Specific Legislation (BSL)
April 04
DENVER (AP) Buddy the
bull terrier and 20 other dogs won
a reprieve from doggy
death row when the governor signed a
law outlawing municipal bans on specific
canine breeds.
The
law, signed Wednesday by Gov. Bill Owens,
invalidates Denver’s 15-year ban
on pit bulls. Denver animal control
officers said they would not euthanize
pit bulls until city officials decide
whether to challenge the law.
Owner
Bill Wilson picked up Buddy, a Staffordshire
bull terrier, from the
animal shelter hours after Owens
signed the law. Rep. Debbie Stafford,
R-Aurora,
rushed the measure (House Bill 1279)
through the Legislature hoping to
beat an April 30 deadline for euthanizing
Buddy.
Stafford
originally intended the
bill to eliminate a so-called ‘first
bite free’ rule, a provision under
the old law that made an owner liable
for a dangerous dog only for the second
offense. The new law makes dog owners
liable the first time a pet attacks.
Victims can sue the owner or the owner’s
insurance company for damages. The Senate
added the provision banning localities
from outlawing certain breeds of dogs,
calling it unfair “doggie profiling”.
Owens said he signed the bill because
it will increase an owner’s liability
if an animal causes serious harm. Please urge your local city or county
representatives to support non-breed
specific vicious dog laws, which require
responsible ownership of all dogs and
do not limit the laws based on breed.

“Pet” Bull
of the Month
Who’s this sweet
guy?? If you are looking for an adorable,
huggable and fun-loving
puppy, Indy is just your type! This sweet
boy is currently in a foster home where
he is learning house and crate training
with good progress. He loves to play and
would do well with an active female companion.
Indy was confiscated in a town with a
breed ban. He was in a high-kill shelter
and was almost out of time when MPR squeezed
him in. Indy is anxiously awaiting his
forever home. Could it be with you?
If you are interested in
Indy, please visit www.mprgroup.net to
learn more about him and our other available
dogs for adoption, and fill out an application.

MPR Mailbox
Dear Missouri Pit Bull Rescue,
Hi.
My name is Lauren. I am 10 years old and live near Chicago.
I saw Mia on the website and am very
sad that she might have to be put to sleep tomorrow.
I am looking for a dog but Kansas City is too far
away. Mia looks very cute. I hope she finds a home.
I showed my class Mia's webpage and everyone wants
Mia to be saved. They signed a petition. Can we
fax it to you? Has Mia found a home yet?
from,
Lauren
We
are happy to report that Mia did find a home with
a wonderful family! We were so
encouraged and
uplifted about this thoughtful and compassionate
group of children who care so much about animals
in need that we wanted to share their words with
all of our friends. We received their wonderful
petition to save Mia’s life (which we posted
on our web site) along with a very generous gift
for our
dogs. Thanks to Lauren and her classmates!!

Endings: An Adoption Story
“ Hooch,
who we re-named Rudy, is the love of our life...
He is one of the smartest dogs I have
ever had the privilege of working with.
As
a long time PittieBull owner and breed lover,
they
still never cease to amaze me. He arrived with
a very strong prey drive and lots of excess
energy. We had two black cats that he had to
learn to
live with, along with a large iguana and an
11-year-old child. Within two months, he learned
that our
cats were off limits.
I
believe with all my heart that most dogs can
be trained to be good,
loyal,
loving pets. He has proven this to be true.
He walks on leash, comes, sits, down, fetches
and
stays with superior results. He can be voice
commanded off a dead run after a squirrel
to return, which is a major accomplishment
in
any dog. He is a pit bull ambassador everywhere
we
go; showing the world his good looks, strength
and wonderful manners.
We are celebrating
his first year of life with our family this
week.
Thank you for allowing us to have this wonderful
animal to share our lives with. We LOVE him...and
he is spoiled utterly rotten. The way all
good Pitties deserve to be.” Thanks,
Jamie McCalister - Happy PeteBull
