MPR Happenings
Wow! Can you believe that MPR was featured in the Kansas
City Star -on the cover of one of the main sections -and the
article was positive for our pitties? That's what happened,
and right before an adoption event! Special thanks to Lisa
G. from the Star for going out on a limb for us and our dogs!
MPR had one of our largest events on record -approximately
200-300 visitors came by to check out the pibbles July 24
and receive free pit bull kisses. The astounding crowd helped
us out in the way of adoptions, we're sure. Lucky dogs that
have gone home for the month of July include Toro, Frank
Sinatra, Maverick, Bianca, Sampson,
Jolly, Polly
Pocket, Summersault,
and Spirit.
With this many dogs going home, we were able to save a few
more unfortunate souls with your financial assistance. Check
out newcomers Sasha,
found on a lonely road by a past volunteer, Mr.
Goodbar,
a possible Dogue de Bordeaux / pit bull mix from animal control,
Nico,
another guy on deathrow with no time to spare, Adorable puppy
Dawson,
and impossibly adorable little Guinness.
Four new girls have also been rescued from metro shelters
and we will post their photos soon -keep and eye out for
Cherry Blossom, Mimosa, puppy Delaney, and Tiramisu! Sadly,
Guinness came down with parvo and we are desperately trying
to save him. Click here for
more info on how you can help.
As always, if you are interested in
volunteering, sponsoring an adoption event, or have
any other suggestions, feel free to send them our way. Just
drop us a line at email@mprgroup.net

Why, oh why, won't people enjoy a little
chocolate once in a while?
My name is Fudge, and my striking chocolate-colored
coat and handsome good looks are getting me nowhere. I've
been waiting for my forever home for a long time now, and
no one is even applying for me?
It really hurts a sensitive guy like me,
I have feelings, you know? Am I just not good enough? I
know you will love me. I'm housebroken, crate-trained, loving,
affectionate, cuddly, and cute. what more could you ask?

Abandoned Puppies
Eleven pit bulls were abandoned in a Lawrence house, nine of
the dogs are puppies. The landlord found the dogs in awful living conditions
after their owners took off. The landlord then enlisted the help of the Lawrence
Humane Society. The nine puppies and their mom didn't have any food, water,
or electricity. The male adult dog did have food and water, but was locked
away in a separate room.
The Lawrence Humane Society says the urine and feces was so bad it burned
off the dog's hair, the pads of their feet were bleeding, and the dogs were
all dehydrated and starving.
Now the Lawrence Humane Society's trying to find the dogs new homes, but
not just anyone can adopt a pit bull. The shelter takes many precautions
before placing a pit bull, including a criminal background check on the potential
owner. If found, the dog's former owners could face charges.

Pit bull set on fire
A
young pit bull is recovering at a San Francisco
animal hospital after someone set it ablaze
in Bayview-Hunters Point.
Deb Campbell,
a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Animal Care and Control
agency, said animal control officers responded to an
emergency call shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday at Harbor and
Northridge roads and found the female dog suffering from
burns.
The dog had put out the flames -- in the process
igniting a small grass fire -- by running away from her
tormenter.
Dr. Brittney Calcott at Pets Unlimited said
the tan-and-white dog -- which she has nicknamed Ember
-- looks to be a purebred pit bull and has a healthy
body and coat and sweet disposition, indicating that she
may be someone's pet.
However, Campbell said, the dog was
not wearing a collar and does not have an identifying
microchip. Animal control officers said no one at the scene
claimed ownership.
"She's doing well under the circumstances," Calcott
said. She said Ember, whom she estimated to be about 10
months old, might be ready to be put up for adoption in
about a month.
The pup is on pain medication, Calcott said,
because she is missing numerous patches of skin on her
hind end, belly, back, ears and lips.
Calcott said there
was no residue on the dog to indicate what was used to
set her afire.
Campbell said she didn't think the incident
indicated a trend of violence against pit bulls, despite
well-publicized attacks involving the animals. In one,
12-year-old Nicholas Faibish was mauled to death June
3 by his family's pet dogs.
However, Calcott, who has worked
at Pets Unlimited for more than three years, said many
of the neglected or abused dogs she has dealt with have
been pit bulls.
There are no suspects in the incident.
Animal Care and Control officials asked that anyone with
information call (415) 554-9400.

Happy Ending |
Hi
Melissa,
Griffin is doing very well.
Teresa and I just love him to death, as well as all
our friends. He has became a good dog socially as
long as other dogs don't show aggression toward him.
He loves everyone, even if they are a little scared
of him at first.
He is still VERY hyper! And
sometimes he pees on the side of our bed [if we don't
spend enough time with him]. He likes to be outside
allllllllll the time and at nite he sleeps in his
crate. He is still isn't very big- it took
him a long time to gain weight, even when we were
feeding him IAMS puppy food with his regular IAMS.
He weighs about 65 pounds now. I am sending
some photos I took of him this week. His sister
Athena is in some of the photos as well. He adores
her and she tolerates his childish demeanor. |
