MPR Current Events

Well adoptions certainly slowed down for MPR in August... But we are still very happy that puppies Root Beer, Shasta, and Confetti found their forever homes this month! Things are winding down after puppy season, but we do still have two females available, (hint, hint!). We love placing pups, but we do ask that you do not ignore the wonderful list of homeless adults also with MPR -these dogs do have advantages over puppy breath as they are already housetrained, crate-trained, and you cal already tell what kind of personalities they have. With our crop of beautiful purebred shelter pits, who needs to go to a breeder?

Speaking of breeding, putting a stop to pet overpopulation is critical, some advice from a reformed breeder . . .

"I was an APBT breeder until I came to realize that with so many dogs dying homeless, now is not the time to add more. One trip to the local shelter set me straight, the reality was almost too much to bear. Row after row of unwanted dogs, many of them beautiful pit bulls, waiting to die. I wanted to make a difference and stop the senseless killing of so many pit bulls. I hope that my choice will impact other breeders."

If that passage wasn't convincing enough, one MPR volunteer reported there were 35 pits at the Kansas City shelter, all on death row, during a recent visit. Overpopulation is everyone’s problem. Do your part and spay or neuter your pet TODAY.

MPR would also like to welcome new volunteers Sherry & Josh, and Simon. Josh, a police officer in Kansas City, and his wife Sherry, have already been very active helping to organize the recent MPR garage sale and as puppy foster parents to Confetti, Shasta, and Fiesta. Simon is a new MPR foster dad who also volunteers at our kennels and helps out at adoption events. Welcome aboard!

As always, if you are interested in volunteering, sponsoring and adoption event, or have any other suggestions, feel free to send them our way. Just drop us a line at email@mprgroup.net

"Pet" Bull of the Month

And they called him Mellow Yellow . . .

Here’s the greatest house dog that ever lived! This wonderful boy found himself stranded on death row at the pound! We could tell right away this guy came from home living, but had lost his family. Now he’s waiting patiently to return to the spoiled lifestyle he was accustomed to . . . Please find a spot in your heart for Mellow Yellow? His name says it all.

Featured Happy Ending

Dear Foster Mom and Dad,

Well, here we go again... my brother Buddy, Mom, the cat, and I are moving. We are going back to Massachusetts, but this time right outside of Boston. I have never seen the place, hopefully there are lots of stray cats and squirrels and bunnies and stuff. We had a good time here in Phoenix. Buddy and I founded the Bad Dogs Club of Arizona. He is the President and I am the Event Coordinator. It is a lot of work but the results are worth it.

We have been working on re-landscaping the yard - a few holes here and there, and some plastic piece decorations Mom is still not sure where they came from or what they used to be. We created a full time water fountain out of two of the sprinklers (much more convenient for drinking from!) Buddy and I were offered a permanent position at the Emergency hospital. We decided to keep the family together and go with Mom and the soft furniture. I think the best thing about Phoenix is that it almost never rains! You may remember my terrible allergy to rain (I melt.) Mom says that the unbearable heat outweighs the whole not raining thing. I have been working on a little theatrical number I call "Heatstroke." In this piece I go outside and lay my black body down on my side in the sun and don't move at all. Mom only lets us stay outside for about 5 minutes during the day, but I try to get my body temperature up as high as I can. Buddy just runs back as soon as he can and stares in the glass door (he is such a mama's boy!)

I caught and killed a dove in the yard the other day. Mom found the desiccated bird body. She knew it was me because Buddy is kind of an idiot about hunting. I am sneaky and sly. Buddy's idea of hunting is yelling "HEY BIRDY, HERE I COME!" Buddy did try to sneak up on my dried-up dead bird, but I think he was afraid of it. He is so domestic. You can really tell he was raised tied to a tree!

I had a couple foster brothers while we lived here. I hung out with the first foster brother for a while. He was a nice guy, the fun-loving gregarious type like Buddy. I bit his face one day and we didn't get to hang out any more. Mom seemed kinda mad. She said that at least he was already taking antibiotics for a cut he had on his ear when we got him. The next foster brother I didn't really get to hang out with. Seems like you bite the face of one foster brother you get some sort of bad reputation. Then we had a puppy for a day and I didn't get to hang out with him either. Mom says it really has to be worth it for her to go through the stress of introducing and monitoring me with other dogs. Oh well.

I continue to love human babies. Buddy and I go to stay with an Aunty, her husband and Baby. The baby and I like to hang out in my crate together. The baby is about 18 months old. She likes to eat crackers. Last time we stayed with her we got in trouble because Buddy and I took turns steeling the Baby's crackers. Six crackers into our scam we were busted. You'll find that babies do not keep a very tight grip on crackers and if you very quietly and carefully grab the cracker on the bottom with your teeth and pull, the cracker will slip from their grasp. Delicious. Despite our naughty behavior, this aunty offered to keep us if Mom didn't want us. Of course Mom didn't take her up on the offer, but we took it as a compliment.

You will be happy to know that I have been very careful not to ruin the tile at the rental house. Buddy and I always make every effort to vomit on the carpet. It is pretty hard to be so careful! I am still really good at "sit." I only have to be told a few times before I decide that they really mean it. Buddy continues to sell his dignity for treats. I find that if I hang out with him (like I have choice...) I will get treats for "sitting" while he goes through his whole humiliating routine. Buddy and I have been going to work with Mom. She says that spending so much time with us reminds her why she usually gets paid to deal with animals. I am not sure what she means by that. Mom continues to tell me what a very good (with a loose interpretation of the word "good") little girly girl I am and how much she loves me. I hope you are doing well. Thanks again for giving me a chance at life. I am really enjoying it!

Love, Pearl
(Mutts-n-Stuff alum)
